Rayan analysis: How Bournemouth’s chaotic style could unlock their Brazilian gem

When it became clear Antoine Semenyo would leave Bournemouth, attention turned to his replacement.

Semenyo had a £65m release clause that could have been activated in early January. Despite a raft of competition for his services, it was Manchester City who won the race to land the Ghanaian. With a significant cash injection, the Cherries ultimately turned their attention to South America, specifically Brazil, in their bid to bolster.

Rayan had Premier League suitors. Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham were credited with an interest, and for good reason. The 19-year-old scored 14 league goals for Vasco Da Gama last season. It was an incredible break out year that thrust Rayan into the spotlight.

Rayan shone on Premier League debut

The winger gave Bournemouth fans a glimpse of his quality in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Wolves. Replacing Junior Kroupi for the final 20 minutes at Molineux, Rayan wasted no time in introducing himself to the travelling fans. Indeed, he was picked out well in space and held off pressure from compatriot Joao Gomes late on.

Rayan drove to the byline before firing in a low cross to present Alex Scott with an easy finish. It was one of two chances created at Molineux. Only Amine Adli (3) made more. Bournemouth’s early impression of the winger, then, was overwhelmingly positive. That, though, shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The forward is expected to win a first Brazil cap before long. Adjusting to the rigours of English football will be a huge first step towards international recognition. Rayan’s style of play, though, does suit the Premier League.

Rayan suits Bournemouth’s style

The teenager isn’t going to be one to deftly beat a marker. Rather, his ability to ghost past a full-back is to utilise his strength and speed to breeze past an opponent. Scott’s goal at Wolves on Saturday was essentially Rayan in a nutshell. You can try and rid him of possession, but he’ll shrug you off and just keep going.

It’s a similar approach to Adama Traore, who, when he isn’t throwing Marc Cucurella to the floor, maximises his pace and power to explode down the wing. It’s this approach that suits Andoni Iraola’s chaotic gameplan. The Spaniard wants the action to be end-to-end, and this benefits Rayan, who is an unpredictable force of nature on his day.

Bournemouth, after all, have scored the second most counter-attacking goals (7) in the Premier League this season. They thrive off quick transitions. The Wolves game on Saturday was a case in point. As Rob Edwards’ side pushed for an equaliser, they left gaps in defence. Bournemouth capitalised to confirm the three points.

Rayan, meanwhile, is a hugely effective counter-attacking weapon. Only Kaio Jorge (5) scored more goals on the counter than Rayan (4) in the 2025 Brasileirao campaign. He breaks forward with speed and purpose, and this will suit Bournemouth’s, at times, heavy metal approach.

Room for improvement

The issue, however, is that Rayan does need to work on his final ball and his decision making. He created just one chance per 90 in the 2025 Brasileirao season, yet fired off 2.9 shots per 90, this despite 23 of 34 starts coming from the flanks. In addition, he averaged just one completed take-on per 90, which for a winger, isn’t great.

The openness with which Bournemouth play will undoubtedly benefit Rayan. The shortcomings to his game, however, would be exposed against teams that do sit deep. With little space afforded in low blocks, this has the potential to serve to highlight a rough edge that does needs smoothing.

At his age, though, Rayan has plenty of time to learn. Iraola turned Semenyo into one of the most effective multi-faceted wide players in the Premier League. Who is to say he can’t repeat the feat with Rayan?

Bournemouth have taken a gamble on Rayan, of course. It’s a risk to sign any player from the Brasileirao. To expect him to make an immediate impact is a tall ask, but it is doable. Look at Estevao for Chelsea. The teenager has made a lightening start to life at Stamford Bridge. The Cherries will hope for similar with Rayan.

With a home debut against injury-hit Aston Villa looming, Rayan has a great chance to really make a name for himself among supporters. Having shone against one Midlands side, Bournemouth will hope for another impressive display on the south coast on Saturday.
