Cesc Fabregas took over the Lariani reins the summer they were promoted, and has taken the Italian side from strength-to-strength. A 1-1 draw with Bologna leaves Fabregas’ side sixth in Serie A. The Spaniard deserves the plaudits.

Nico Paz has been the driving force for Como. The Argentine, who is expected to return to Real Madrid this summer, has established himself as one of the finest young attackers in Europe. After all, Paz ranks top for completed take ons (44) and seventh for chances created (36) in Italy’s top tier this term.
However, while Paz has praised to high-heaven for his consistency in attack, Como are also one of the best defensive sides in Serie A. Indeed, only Roma (12) have conceded fewer goals than Como (13) in the 2025-26 Serie A campaign.

Jacobo Ramon has been the standout performer at the back for Como. Like Paz, Ramon came through the Real Madrid ranks. The 21-year-old move to the Italian side over the summer, while Los Blancos retain a 50% sell-on clause. Similarly with Paz, the Spanish giants have a number of buy-back clauses for Ramon. They wanted the centre-back to gain regular game time in order to maintain his development.
The performances under Fabregas suggests that Los Blancos will activate their buy-back clause before long. What’s more, Ramon’s showings for Como have attracted interest from Premier League pair Liverpool and Chelsea. The Reds are in the market for a new centre-back this month.
Marc Guehi remains the top target, yet with Manchester City and Arsenal among those tracking the Crystal Palace captain, the defending Premier League champions may turn their attention elsewhere. Chelsea, meanwhile, are often keen to hoover up the best young talents on the continent, of which Ramon is one.
Who type of defender is Jacobo Ramon?
Standing at 6ft5in, Ramon is a natural-born defender. And he uses his standing to good effect. Only five players have won more aerial duels than the 21-year-old (53) in Serie A this season. There are some concerns over his overall effectiveness in the air. A 64.6% success rate leaves room for improvement. However, time is on the centre-back’s side to develop this side to his game.
Additionally, he has a knack for being in the right place at the right time to alleviate pressure on the Como goal. 69 clearances ranks 29th in Serie A this season. Como have the second-best defensive record for a reason. What’s important, though, is that Ramon is a front-foot defender, which is vital as Fabregas’ side dominate teams.
Ramon’s size lends credence to the argument that he’s something of a no-nonsense defender. The youngster is anything but. Como have the highest possession average (60.8%) in Serie A this season. Fabregas needs his centre-backs to get the ball rolling from defence to dominate matches.
Ramon abides by his manager’s demands. 974 passes is the 19th most in Serie A this season. A 91.1% success rate is the 14th best. He’s key to the way Como play. With an impressive range of passing, too, Ramon is just as important to the Italian side as Paz.

And combined with his speed across the ground for a player his size, Ramon has drawn comparisons to Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk. No wonder, then, that Liverpool have been credited with an interest. With the desire to step out of defence akin to that of Van Dijk, Ramon’s distribution has proven a huge benefit to Como.
Not only does the Serie A side dominate, they rely on quick transitions to put teams to the sword. Only Torino (7) have scored more counter-attacking goals than Como (4) in Serie A this season. For context, they managed seven in the entirety of last season. It’s another weapon at Fabregas’ disposal that he is utilising to good effect.
Whether Liverpool or Chelsea can lure Ramon away from the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia this month, however, remains to be seen. Real Madrid will have a say on whether Como cash in on the centre-back given the number of clauses inserted into the deal that took him from Spain to Italy in the first place.
Even so, interest in Ramon shouldn’t come as a surprise. He’s a brute of a centre-back but one that plays the modern way that’ll appeal to the Premier League pair. The Spaniard is certainly one to keep tabs on even if he remains at Como beyond January.
