Liverpool are in terrific form at the moment as they look to mount a title challenge against current leaders Manchester City. After their Tuesday night victory over Leeds, the Citizens possess a four point gap at the top of the table, but the Reds can cut that to one point with a win here – although anything less than a victory could see them leapfrogged into second by Chelsea.
It’s difficult to foresee Liverpool slipping up here though. Jurgen Klopp’s men have been at their scintillating best in recent weeks and come into this fixture on the back of a seven game winning streak which has included thumping wins over the likes of Southampton and Everton and hard-fought victories over Wolves and more recently Aston Villa.
Newcastle are the visitors to Anfield this time around and the Magpies are in a very worrying position towards the bottom of the table right now. New boss Eddie Howe will have a considerable war chest to tap into this January and that will certainly be required as they currently sit in 19th place in the table, three points away from Watford and the relative safety of 17th place.
Just as results appeared to be improving for Howe as he earned a first win with a 1-0 victory over Burnley just over a week ago, the Magpies slumped to a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Leicester City at the King Power Stadium over the weekend. Unfortunately for them, Anfield is probably the last place you want to go if you’re feeling a little low on confidence right now, so this could be a difficult night’s work.
Liverpool vs Newcastle: Match Stats
Jamaal Lascelles has the worst disciplinary record in the Newcastle squad with five yellow cards to his name so far this season, four of which have come in his last seven games. We think the centre-back may struggle to cope with the direct running and blistering pace of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah and may have to take a booking for the team with a tactical foul at some point in the 90 minutes at Anfield.
There’s a huge gap between these two sides, not only in terms of quality but also in terms of form. Liverpool have racked up four goals in recent wins over Wolves and Everton, while Newcastle shipped four against Leicester on Sunday afternoon. Expect plenty of goals in a comfortable home victory on Merseyside.

Perhaps surprisingly, Newcastle were able to take draws from both of their matches against Liverpool last season but they haven’t beaten the Reds in any of the last nine meetings between the two sides. Joe Willock rescued a point for the Magpies on their last trip to Anfield with a last-minute equaliser back in April.
