Bayern Munich were, surprisingly, in a spot of bother come half time on Saturday.
In this article, we’ll cover:
The Bavarian powerhouse found themselves 1-0 down at the break at Borussia Dortmund. As things stood, Dortmund were closing the gap at the top of the table to just five points. Might there be a title race yet?
Keep Calm and Harry On
Hopes of Dortmund providing a genuine threat were dashed come full time. Mr Bayern himself Joshua Kimmich bagged the winner late on as FC Hollywood ran out 3-2 victors. They’re now 11 points clear with 10 games to play. Vincent Kompany’s men are expected to be crowned champions sooner rather than later.
And the reason for a successful comeback? Harry Kane, of course. Dortmund weren’t exactly overwhelmed in Der Klassiker. They didn’t dominate possession but they had their chances. Yet it was Kane, again, who proved decisive. Just as every Bayern fan may have lost their head, the England captain remained unfazed. Keep Calm and Harry On.

It was Kane who struck 10 minutes into second half to draw Bayern level. The 32-year-old showed no signs of losing his cool to sweep home a 70th minute penalty. He’s now scored at least 16 more goals (30) than any other player in Germany’s top tier this term. It would take a minor miracle for Kane to not win the Kicker-Torjägerkanone – the German Golden Boot – this season.
xG Overperformance
That shouldn’t come as a surprise. Kane was able to routinely hit the back of the net in a declining Tottenham team. Now he’s being supplied by a world class support act. Bayern are creating more chances per 90 (14.9) than any other Bundesliga team this season. It’s second to Barcelona (15.8) in Europe’s top five leagues. Kane, meanwhile, has managed more shots (95) than any other Bundesliga player in the 2025-26 campaign.
The number of efforts he’s fired off means he ranks top for Expected Goals (22.58) in Germany’s top tier. That in itself is almost double his nearest competitor, Bayern teammate Luis Diaz (12.37). Kane’s xG haul is 7.42 below his overall goal haul. As one might expect, it’s the biggest xG overperformance in the Bundesliga, and by some distance too.
It’s proof, though, that Kane is capable of the spectacular. Sometimes, Bayern needs these moments of magic to drag them to victory. More often than not, the Bundesliga champions will overwhelm opponents. Kompany’s men are top for possession (66.9%) in the division.
In a way, this increases the pressure on the club to tear teams apart. Opponents will naturally sit deeper when they face Bayern, meaning it can prove harder to break them down. Yet Kane has proven time and time again that he is capable of scoring the chances he perhaps shouldn’t.
Bundesliga record in Kane’s sights
Relying on a striker to overperform their xG isn’t sustainable. However, teams, no matter their stature, require their marksman to pull a rabbit out of the hat to break down even the staunchest of backlines.
As such, Kane is now just 11 goals short of matching Robert Lewandowski’s record 41-goal haul from the 2020-21 season. With 10 games to play, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Kane break that record, even if the Pole had a one-goal advantage at this stage in his memorable campaign. Lewandowski ended that season with seven assists to his name, too. Again, the England striker should better that return.

Kane, after all, has five assists to his name. He ranks 20th for chances created (32) in the division. He places third for accurate through balls (6) and fourth for big chances created (14) in the Bundesliga. Kane is again proving that there is more to his game than just goals
With a commendable 81.2% pass accuracy, the forward continues to show why he is considered Europe’s standout striker given both his goal return and ability to bring others into play. As the all-round frontman, there are none better in the game, and few, if any, who can come remotely close to even reaching his level.
Champions League success to come?
What will cap the campaign is Champions League success. Kane has struck eight times in Europe’s elite club competition this season. Only Kylian Mbappe (13) and Anthony Gordon (10) have netted more times than the former Spurs man. Have been drawn on the tougher side of the draw, it’ll be harder for Bayern to go the distance in Europe.
Yet they have one of the strongest squads in Europe. And with the continent’s leading marksman netting with ruthless efficiency, Bayern have every right to fancy their chances of lifting the Champions League in Budapest in May.
Regardless of team success, however, Kane continues to perform well above expectations, which is saying something. Having now scored over 500 goals for club and country in his career, this season has been another successful one for the England skipper.
