36 goals were scored by 35 different players, fast-starting Michael Carrick stamped his name in the Premier League record books, and Arsenal showcased just why they are the undisputed corner kings in a frenetic gameweek 28.

Stats you might have missed
Wolves puncture Villa’s title hopes
- Wolves beat a team in the top-half of the Premier League table for the first time in 18 games dating back to February 2025.
Wolves gave their patient fans something to smile about after they stunned Midlands rivals Aston Villa 2-0 at Molineux. It was only the club’s second win of the season and their first victory over a club in the top half of the Premier League table in 18 games dating back a year.
While they remain a surely insurmountable 14 points adrift of safety, Wolves, on 13 points, will just be relieved at officially avoiding Derby’s worst-ever points tally of 11.
As for Villa, their already faint title hopes now seem to be extinguished as they slid to 4th, 13 points adrift of Arsenal.
Van Dijk’s goal surge
- Only John Terry (41) has more Premier League goals – excluding penalties – from centre-backs than Virgil van Dijk (28).
Liverpool swept aside West Ham United 5-2 at Anfield, a game in which the Reds became just the second club ever to score three first-half goals from corners in a single Premier League match, after Manchester United against Leicester City in September 2016.
Virgil van Dijk was once again on the scoresheet, netting his third goal in six games to take his Premier League career tally to 28. Among centre-backs, only John Terry, with 41 goals, has scored more non-penalty goals in the competition’s history.
Cherries recovery
- Only Aston Villa (19) and Sunderland (16) have recovered more points from losing positions this season than Bournemouth (15).
Bournemouth extended their unbeaten run to eight Premier League matches after they came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Sunderland.
The Cherries have now won 15 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, third behind only Aston Villa (19) and Sunderland (16).
Thiago’s importance
- Igor Thiago has scored 18 goals for Brentford this season, with those strikes directly contributing to 15 Premier League points, which is the most of any player this season.
The game of the weekend came at Turf Moor where Burnley and Brentford played out a breathless seven-goal thriller, which the visitors edged 4-3 in the 93rd minute.
Brentford stormed into a 3-0 first-half lead, only for Burnley to roar back with three second-half goals before the hour mark. The Clarets then thought they had scored the winner, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Instead, it was the Bees who snatched the points in the 93rd minute, although there was still time for the hosts to score another goal in the 99th minute, which was again disallowed.
The game saw Brentford’s Igor Thiago score yet again, with his 18 goals this season worth 15 points to the Bees, which is the most of any player in the Premier League this season.
Moyes’ men march on the road
- No club has won more Premier League games than Everton (12) since David Moyes’ first away game back at the club on 25th January 2025.
Everton held on to claim an impressive 3-2 win away to Newcastle, which condemned the Toon to their fifth defeat in their last six league games.
The Toffees’ resurgence on the road has been remarkable under David Moyes who has now overseen 12 away wins since he took charge of his first away game back at the club on 25th January 2025. No Premier League side has won more away fixtures in that period, with Arsenal and Brentford also registering 12.
This season, only Arsenal have recorded more victories and accumulated more points on their travels than Everton.
City end Leeds’ light show
- Leeds lost for the first time in their last 26 league or play-off matches at Elland Road that have kicked off after 5pm.
Manchester City kept the pressure on Arsenal with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Leeds. City have now won each of their last six meetings with Leeds and have claimed three straight away league wins at Elland Road for the first time since between 1924 to 1928.
Leeds, however, will feel aggrieved not to have taken something from the contest, while the defeat ended an impressive streak of 25 unbeaten league and play-off matches at Elland Road in games that have kicked off after 5pm.
Torrid Tottenham
- Tottenham have equalled their longest-ever Premier League run without a win (10 games).
Tottenham slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Fulham as they equalled their longest ever run without a Premier League win (10 games), with their last victory dating back to 2025. The only other time Spurs went 10 consecutive games without a Premier League victory was during the 1993-94 season under Ossie Ardiles.
As a result, Igor Tudor has become only the second Spurs manager to lose each of his first two Premier League games in charge of the club after Martin Jol in 2004.
Carrick’s record start
- No manager has won more points (23) from their opening nine Premier League matches than Michael Carrick.
Manchester United came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 and extend their superb start to life under interim boss Michael Carrick, who has accrued 19 points from a possible 21 since he replaced Ruben Amorim.
In fact, Carrick is actually unbeaten in his first nine games (W7 D2) in the Man United dugout, having previously overseen a win and a draw back in 2001. Carrick’s tally of 23 points from his opening nine Premier League games equals the best start by any manager in the competition’s history; matching Ange Postecoglou, who also amassed 23 points from his first nine league fixtures at Tottenham Hotspur.
Carrick is also the first ever Man United manager to win their first five Premier League home games.
Dat Guy Welbz
- Danny Welbeck matched his best-ever Premier League return of 10 goals in a campaign and in doing so he became only the eighth player aged 33 or older to score 10 or more goals in consecutive Premier League seasons.
Brighton secured back-to-back wins in the Premier League after they edged out Nottingham Forest 2-1 on the south coast.
Diego Gomez broke the deadlock for the hosts as he became just the third Paraguayan to score five or more goals in a single Premier League season after Roque Santa Cruz (2007-08) and Miguel Almiron (2022-23).
But the decisive goal came from that guy Danny Welbeck, whose winner saw him match his best-ever Premier League return of 10 goals in a campaign. In doing so, he became only the eighth player aged 33 or older to score 10 or more goals in consecutive Premier League seasons.
Arteta’s corner kings
- Arsenal have equalled the record for the most goals (16) from corners in a Premier League season.
Arsenal held their nerve to beat 10-man Chelsea with a 2-1 victory as they regained their five-point lead at the top of the table. It stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions against the Blues, who they have now beaten in four consecutive league home game for the first time since 1994.
Once again, their defenders made the difference. No Premier League defenders have been involved in more goals this season than Gabriel and Jurrien Timber, who both now have seven goal contributions on the board. Gabriel supplied the assist for William Saliba’s opener against the Blues – who they are now unbeaten against in 11 games in all competitions – before Timber struck the decisive winner.
Both goals arrived from corners, meaning Arsenal have now scored 16 goals from corners this season, which is the joint-highest total ever recorded in a single Premier League campaign, and they still have nine matches remaining.
Only Oldham Athletic (1992-93), West Bromwich Albion (2016-17), and Arsenal’s own 2023-24 side have previously reached that tally.
