Man Utd vs Bournemouth referee: Simon Hooper’s history with both clubs

Manchester United and Bournemouth face off in the Premier League on Monday at 8pm, with Simon Hooper set to referee.

Hooper was heavily involved in Premier League matches earlier in the season, but he hasn’t been used as much in recent weeks. He has still overseen nine games so far, with this set to be his 10th.

The official has already overseen games for both of these sides this season. In fact, he’s refereed Bournemouth twice in the Premier League in 2025-26.

Man Utd went into Gameweek 16 in sixth, just one point outside the top four. Bournemouth, meanwhile, are down in 13th after their winless run.

Simon Hooper’s Man Utd record

Hooper has refereed Man Utd just 10 times in this career having only been recently been trusted with the bigger names of the Premier League. His first Man Utd game came way back in 2015, in the third round of the EFL Cup, but the following next nine have come in the Premier League. The Red Devils are on a bit of an unhappy streak with Hooper in the middle, winning just one of their past five such matches.

What happened when Simon Hooper last refereed Man Utd?

Hooper was the man in the middle for Man Utd’s Gameweek 1 defeat to Arsenal — trusted with the biggest game of the season. It was a busy game for Hooper too. He showed Man Utd just one yellow card to Patrick Dorgu, but booked four Arsenal players. Fans believe Hooper also missed a penalty for Man Utd, with William Saliba brought down in the box. Hooper waved play on and it was backed up by VAR, with the referee’s initial decision probably carrying the weight. Had he given a penalty, it likely wouldn’t have been overturned either.

Simon Hooper’s Bournemouth record

Hooper has overseen 29 Bournemouth matches so far, only refereeing two clubs more times in his career. He’s been quick quite to point to the spot in their matches too. Hooper has awarded Bournemouth nine penalties across his career, the joint-most he has given to a single club. He has also given two penalties against them. Hooper has followed Bournemouth up the ranks, refereeing them at every possible professional level, from League Two to the Premier League. The only competition he hasn’t refereed them in to date is the FA Cup.

What happened when Simon Hooper last refereed Bournemouth?

As mentioned, Hooper has refereed Bournemouth twice in the Premier League this season. The latest game came at the start of October, a 3-1 win for the Cherries over Fulham. It was a pretty uneventful game with just one yellow card, shown to Fulham’s Issa Diop. Bournemouth did want a penalty for a foul by Diop, who appeared to have stood on Evanilson’s foot in the box. But Hooper did not given anything and VAR backed him up. It was a tight call, though, and probably another one where the initial decision would have stuck whichever way it went.

What should we expect from Simon Hooper?

Hooper is one of the harsher referees in the Premier League this season. He’s averaged 4.8 cards per game, with only Tim Robinson (5.7) showing more. Hooper has also averaged just five fouls per card, again among the “worst” of Premier League officials for that stat. He’s also one of just three referees to show two red cards this season, but the other two have done so across 11 matches as opposed to Hooper’s nine. With 24.56 fouls per match, expect a stop-start game with a lot of cards.
