What happened when Stuart Attwell last refereed Liverpool?
Attwell was the referee for Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield in November, a result that ended their losing streak. There was a potential moment of controversy too. Attwell booked Amadou Onana for a clash from a corner with Alexis Mac Allister, but replays showed it could have been more. Onana appeared to have had his hands around Mac Allister’s neck, which normally results in a red card. It was checked by VAR and confirmed as a yellow, but fans voted it to have been an error. Attwell showed two yellow cards to Liverpool players including one to Dominik Szoboszlai late on for time wasting.

Attwell was the man in the middle for Sunderland’s 2-0 away defeat to Manchester United in October. There was a VAR call in this game too, but it went the right way. Benjamin Sesko was penalised for a high boot in the box, when contesting a Sunderland long throw with Trai Hume. Attwell pointed to the spot, but the call was overturned after a VAR review. It was a tough afternoon for Sunderland, with four players booked in total.
