New York Islanders 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. The Islanders open 2026-27 at Toronto on 30 September with a new captain. Bo Horvat was named on 14 September after Anders Lee left for Utah, and the opener could pit Matthew Schaefer, the 2025 first overall pick, against Toronto’s Gavin McKenna, who went first in 2026.
Second in the Metropolitan Division on 28 March, the Islanders lost four straight, fired Patrick Roy and won one of their last four under Peter DeBoer, finishing sixth at 43-34-5 with 91 points and missing the playoffs. Schaefer won the Calder Trophy unanimously after 23 goals, matching the NHL record for a rookie defenceman.
Lee, the captain for eight seasons, signed with Utah on 1 July, and goalie David Rittich joined New Jersey. Matias Maccelli, goalie Vítek Vaněček and defenceman Matthew Kessel signed one-year deals, Logan Stanley arrived on 27 September and the Islanders drafted Swedish defenceman Malte Gustafsson 13th overall.
Ilya Sorokin, the Vezina Trophy runner-up, is the starter, with Semyon Varlamov, 38, back as his backup after partial replacements of both knees. Mathew Barzal, the top scorer with 72 points, missed camp with knee inflammation and on 28 September was listed as injured non-roster, a status that lets him return as soon as he is fit; the day before, the club had not ruled him out of the opener.
The AHL affiliate has moved from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Ontario as the Hamilton Hammers, and UBS Arena hosts the NHL All-Star Game on 6 February 2027. On Bet99’s July board the Islanders were +15000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 24th of 32.

New York Islanders history
The NHL awarded a Long Island franchise to Roy Boe on 8 November 1971, partly to keep the rival World Hockey Association out of the new Nassau Coliseum, and the Islanders joined for 1972-73 with the Atlanta Flames. General manager Bill Torrey built through the draft. The first team went 12-60-6, then the most losses in NHL history, but Denis Potvin arrived with the first pick in 1973 and Al Arbour became coach. In 1975 the Islanders came back from 3-0 down to beat Pittsburgh in their first playoffs, and Potvin, Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy each won the Calder Trophy in the 1970s.
Arbour’s teams won four straight Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. Bob Nystrom’s overtime goal in Game 6 against Philadelphia won the first, Minnesota fell in five games in 1981, and Vancouver (1982) and Edmonton (1983) were swept, with Trottier, Butch Goring, Bossy and Billy Smith taking the Conn Smythe Trophy in turn. Edmonton beat the Islanders in five games in the 1984 Final, ending an NHL-record run of 19 straight series wins. Pat LaFontaine’s goal in the fourth overtime of Game 7 won the 1987 Easter Epic against Washington, and in 1993 David Volek’s overtime winner in Game 7 knocked out two-time defending champion Pittsburgh.
The Islanders moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn in 2015 and returned to Long Island in stages before UBS Arena opened in 2021. Under Barry Trotz they reached the third round in 2020 and 2021, losing to Tampa Bay both times, and Carolina beat them in the first round in 2023 and 2024. After missing the playoffs in 2025 they won the draft lottery with a 3.5 per cent chance, hired Mathieu Darche as general manager and took Matthew Schaefer first overall. In 2025-26 Schaefer won the Calder Trophy, Patrick Roy was fired on 5 April and the Islanders missed the playoffs again, while division rival Carolina won the Stanley Cup.
Most famous player: Bryan Trottier
Trottier grew up in Val Marie, Saskatchewan, and the Islanders drafted him 22nd overall in 1974. He won the Calder Trophy in 1976 with 95 points, then an NHL rookie record, and in 1978-79 he took the Art Ross and Hart Trophies with 134 points. On 23 December 1978 he had six points in one period, an NHL record that has been matched but never broken. He centred Bossy and Clark Gillies on the Trio Grande line.
He was playoff MVP in 1980, when the Islanders won the first of their four straight Cups, and he holds the club records for games, assists and points. The Islanders bought out his contract in 1990, and he won two more Cups with Pittsburgh before the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted him in 1997, his first year of eligibility. His No. 19 was retired on 20 October 2001, and in June 2026 Canada Post put him on a stamp honouring Indigenous leaders in sport.
