Stanley Cup odds are the longest-running bet in hockey. You back a team in September and find out in June, which makes this the most patient market on the board and one of the least efficient. Carolina arrive as champions for 2026-27 after beating Vegas 4-2, and the season opens on 29 September 2026. This page explains how the market is priced, what the history says and where the money usually goes wrong.

How the Cup futures market is priced
A Cup price is the product of four playoff rounds, and each round is close to a coin flip between good teams. That compounding is why even a dominant favourite rarely trades shorter than about +500 before the season, and why the whole board carries a heavy margin. The sum of implied probabilities across all 32 teams is well above 100 per cent, so shopping between operators matters more here than on a single game. Our futures betting guide covers how the stake is held until settlement.
Who won the 2026 Stanley Cup
Carolina, for the second time in their history. They took the Final 4-2 against the Vegas Golden Knights and clinched with a 3-0 win on 14 June 2026, with Jordan Staal named Conn Smythe winner at 37. Neither team had been a pre-season favourite, which is the normal pattern rather than an upset. The full record sits on our Stanley Cup winners page.
What the history tells you about Cup betting
Three patterns are worth carrying into a futures bet.
- The pre-season favourite usually loses. Across the last twenty years the team that opened shortest has won only a handful of times. Paying a short price for certainty in a four-round tournament is the most common mistake on this market.
- Repeat champions have become rare. Florida in 2024 and 2025 managed it, and before them Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021. Outside those pairs, no team has defended the Cup since Detroit in 1998.
- Canadian teams keep getting close. Seven Final appearances since 1993 and no win, including Edmonton in both 2024 and 2025. The market prices Canadian teams honestly, but the sentiment money is heavy, which can shorten them past their true number.
When to bet the Cup market
There are three sensible entry points and they suit different appetites. Pre-season, in late September, gives the longest prices and the least information. The American Thanksgiving mark in late November is the traditional checkpoint, since the teams in a playoff place then usually stay there. The trade deadline in March is the last window before the field is set, and it is where a contender that has just added a goaltender can still be found at a workable number.
Hedging is part of this market too. A ticket on a team that reaches the Final can be laid off against the opponent, or against the series price, to lock in part of the return. That is worth planning before you place the original bet rather than after.

Prices for the 2026-27 season are posted through late September 2026, ahead of the 29 September opener. Carolina defend the title, though the pre-season favourite has rarely gone on to win in recent decades.

Yes. In Ontario and Alberta you can use private sportsbooks. Elsewhere the market is offered by the provincial lottery operator, such as PlayNow in British Columbia and Manitoba or Mise-o-jeu+ in Quebec.
Pre-season prices are longest but carry the least information. Many bettors prefer late November, once the standings have settled, or the March trade deadline, when rosters are final.
No. An outright Cup bet loses as soon as the team is knocked out. Some bettors hedge later in the playoffs to protect part of the return.
American odds of +900 mean a $100 stake returns $900 in profit if the bet wins. Longer prices mean the sportsbook rates the chance as smaller.
