Nashville Predators 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. The Predators open 2026-27 at home to the Minnesota Wild on 1 October with a new front office and a rebuilt forward group. Chris MacFarland, hired from Colorado on 2 June as president of hockey operations and general manager, kept Andrew Brunette as coach. Slow starts cost Nashville a playoff place in each of the past two seasons, so the first month matters.
Last season the Predators went 38-34-10 for 86 points, sixth in the Central Division and 23rd in the league. On 1 December they were last in the NHL at 8-13-4. They went 30-21-6 from there and still missed the West’s second wild card by four points, behind Los Angeles. Steven Stamkos scored 42 goals, his eighth 40-goal season. Filip Forsberg had 40 goals and a team-high 75 points.
MacFarland reshaped the forwards by trade: Ross Colton and Jack Drury came from Colorado, Mavrik Bourque and defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin from Dallas, Nils Höglander from Vancouver and Adam Edstrom from the Rangers, while Alexander Kerfoot signed as a free agent. Erik Haula left for Los Angeles, Zachary L’Heureux and Fedor Svechkov went to Colorado for Drury, and Luke Evangelista, who had 56 points, was traded to New Jersey on 1 September for a conditional 2028 first-round pick and a 2028 second. The Predators drafted Wyatt Cullen, son of former Predator Matt Cullen, 10th overall.
Juuse Saros, in the second year of an eight-year contract, played 59 games last season, second most in the NHL, but his 3.16 goals-against average was the highest of his career and his .894 save percentage his lowest in a full season. Justus Annunen, who went 10-12-2 with a .907 save percentage, backs him up after his 22-save shutout won Finland the world championship final in May. No Predator was on ESPN’s injury report on 28 September.
Brady Martin, the fifth pick in 2025, was sent to Milwaukee to play centre before the 28 September roster deadline, and St. Louis claimed defenceman Justin Barron on waivers. Lyubushkin and Nick Perbix were placed on waivers. Pekka Rinne enters the Hockey Hall of Fame on 9 November, and the club marks it at home to Carolina on 3 November, his birthday. On Bet99’s July board the Predators were +20000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 26th of 32.

Nashville Predators history
The NHL granted Craig Leipold a conditional expansion franchise for Nashville on 25 June 1997. That summer the club hired David Poile as general manager and Barry Trotz as head coach, and fans chose the name Predators, a nod to the remains of a sabre-toothed cat found downtown in 1971. The Predators lost their first game 1-0 at home to Florida on 10 October 1998, and three nights later Andrew Brunette, now their coach, scored the club’s first goal in a 3-2 win over Carolina. Trotz coached the first 15 seasons, and the first playoff trip came in 2004, a six-game loss to Detroit.
Goaltender Pekka Rinne and defenceman Shea Weber, captain from 2010, anchored the teams that won the club’s first playoff series, against Anaheim in 2011. Peter Laviolette succeeded Trotz in 2014, and after Weber was traded to Montréal for P.K. Subban on 29 June 2016, the Predators went from the West’s last playoff place to the 2017 Final: they swept top-seeded Chicago and beat St. Louis and Anaheim in six games each. Pittsburgh won the Final in six, finishing it 2-0 in Nashville on 11 June 2017. A year later the Predators won the Presidents’ Trophy with 117 points and Rinne won the Vezina Trophy, and Roman Josi, captain since 2017, won the Norris Trophy in 2020.
The Predators missed the playoffs in 2023, ending a run of eight straight appearances, and Poile retired that summer. Trotz returned as general manager, Brunette took over behind the bench, and in 2023-24 the Predators set a club-record 18-game point streak before Vancouver beat them in six games in the first round. Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault signed in July 2024, but Nashville went 30-44-8 in 2024-25, and in 2025-26 the Predators finished 38-34-10 and missed the 2026 playoffs by four points. Trotz announced his plan to retire as general manager in February 2026, and Chris MacFarland replaced him on 2 June.
Most famous player: Pekka Rinne
Nashville drafted Rinne in the eighth round, 258th overall, in 2004, and he played all 15 of his NHL seasons for the club before retiring in July 2021. He holds the franchise records for games by a goaltender (683), wins (369) and shutouts (60), and his 2.43 goals-against average and .917 save percentage are also club bests. He was a Vezina Trophy finalist three times before winning it in 2018, a year after taking the Predators to the 2017 Final. He even scored a goal, in Chicago on 9 January 2020.
His No. 35 was the first number the Predators retired, on 24 February 2022, and a bronze statue of him was unveiled on the Bridgestone Arena plaza on 25 March 2023. He won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2021 for his community work, including the 365 Pediatric Cancer Fund he started with Shea Weber. In June 2026 the Hockey Hall of Fame elected him, the first player who spent his whole career in Nashville to be chosen, and he is inducted on 9 November 2026. Roman Josi holds the club records for games, assists and points, and Filip Forsberg for goals.
