Columbus Blue Jackets 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. Columbus open 2026-27 at home to Buffalo on 1 October, and seven of their first nine games are at Nationwide Arena. Rick Bowness, who took over in January, has made changing the culture his priority after a sixth straight season without playoff hockey, and the Blue Jackets start without a captain now that Boone Jenner has left for Washington.
Last season turned on a coaching change. The Blue Jackets were 19-19-7 and last in the Metropolitan Division when Dean Evason was fired on 12 January, and they climbed to second under Bowness by late March. They then lost nine of their last 11 games, finishing fifth at 40-30-12 with 92 points, seven points short of a wild card. Zach Werenski had 81 points (22 goals, 59 assists) in 75 games and became the first Blue Jacket to win the Norris Trophy, and Kirill Marchenko led the team with 27 goals.
Jenner, captain for five seasons and the club’s leader in games played, signed with Washington as a free agent on 1 July, and Mason Marchment left for San Jose. Valeri Nichushkin, a Cup winner with Colorado in 2022, arrived from the Avalanche for three draft picks on 25 June, and Ryan Lomberg, a 2024 champion with Florida, signed as a free agent. Werenski stayed after vetoing a trade to Dallas on 30 June, and Adam Fantilli, who scored 24 goals last season, signed a six-year contract on 24 September after missing the first eight days of camp. With the 14th pick in the draft the club took Oscar Hemming, a Finnish forward at Boston College.
Jet Greaves won the starting job last season, going 26-19-9 with a .908 save percentage in 55 games, and signed a three-year contract in July. Elvis Merzlikins is out indefinitely after shoulder surgery on 17 August. The club signed Cam Talbot, 39, on 14 September, and he is the only other goalie on the roster since Pheonix Copley was waived. Isac Lundestrom (Achilles) and Dante Fabbro (upper body) start the season injured. Damon Severson, who had shoulder surgery in April, did not play in the preseason and is listed as day-to-day.
Werenski has two seasons left on his contract and can sign an extension from 1 July 2027, and he said in September that he hopes to re-sign then. Marchenko, who has scored at least 20 goals in each of his four NHL seasons, is in the last year of his contract. On Bet99’s July board the Blue Jackets were +6000 for the Stanley Cup, 20th of 32.

Columbus Blue Jackets odds and how the market sees them
The Blue Jackets markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. Columbus Blue Jackets history
The NHL awarded Columbus an expansion team on 25 June 1997, after Nationwide agreed to finance an arena, and the name Blue Jackets, a nod to Ohio’s part in the Civil War, was announced that November. Owned by founder John H. McConnell, the club joined the NHL with the Minnesota Wild in 2000-01 and lost its first game 5-3 to Chicago at Nationwide Arena on 7 October 2000. In 2002 Columbus traded up on draft day to take Rick Nash first overall, and his 41 goals in 2003-04 earned a share of the Rocket Richard Trophy. The first playoff place came in 2008-09 under coach Ken Hitchcock, and Detroit swept that series.
Nash asked for a trade and was sent to the New York Rangers in July 2012. Sergei Bobrovsky, acquired that summer, won the Vezina Trophy in 2013 and 2017, and in 2014, their first season in the Eastern Conference, the Blue Jackets won a playoff game for the first time, against Pittsburgh. John Tortorella’s 2016-17 team won a franchise-record 16 straight games and finished with 108 points, still the club record. In 2019 Columbus swept the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Tampa Bay Lightning for its first series win before Boston won the second round in six games, and in 2020 the club beat Toronto in the qualifying round, then lost to Tampa Bay in a first round that opened with a five-overtime game. The second round in 2019 is still as far as the Blue Jackets have gone.
A rebuild followed Tortorella’s departure in 2021. In July 2022 the club signed Johnny Gaudreau, a free agent from Calgary, to a seven-year contract, and he led the Blue Jackets in scoring in both of his seasons in Columbus. On 29 August 2024, before his third season, he and his brother Matthew were killed when a driver struck them as they rode their bicycles near their home in New Jersey, and the club raised a memorial banner with his No. 13 at its home opener that October. Under Dean Evason the Blue Jackets missed the playoffs by two points in 2024-25. Rick Bowness replaced him in January 2026, but Columbus finished seven points short and missed the 2026 playoffs, their sixth straight absence.
Most famous player: Rick Nash
General manager Doug MacLean traded with Florida on draft day in 2002 for the first overall pick, and the Blue Jackets used it on Nash. As an 18-year-old rookie he scored 17 goals and was a Calder Trophy finalist, and in 2003-04 his 41 goals tied Jarome Iginla and Ilya Kovalchuk for the Rocket Richard Trophy, the first NHL award won by a Blue Jacket. He became captain in March 2008 and led the club to its first playoff place the next season with 79 points, then a franchise record.
Nash played nine seasons in Columbus before he asked for a trade and was sent to the New York Rangers in July 2012. His 289 goals and 547 points in 674 games are still club records, and on 5 March 2022 his No. 61 became the first number the Blue Jackets retired. He won Olympic gold with Canada in 2010 and 2014 and now works in the club’s hockey operations department as director of player personnel and development.
