New Jersey Devils 2026-27 season outlook

Written 28 September 2026. The Devils open 2026-27 at home to Philadelphia on 1 October under a new general manager. Sunny Mehta, hired from Florida in April, kept Sheldon Keefe as coach and added depth up front, and the goaltending after Jacob Markstrom’s departure is the biggest question.

Last season the Devils went 42-37-3 for 87 points, seventh in the Metropolitan, and missed the playoffs for the third time in five seasons. Jack Hughes led them with 77 points despite missing 21 games, and his overtime goal won the Olympic final for the United States against Canada. Nico Hischier scored a team-high 28 goals.

Mehta traded Markstrom to Florida on 30 June for forwards Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist and Ben Steeves, and sent Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov to Calgary for prospect Etienne Morin and three draft picks. Anthony Mantha, who scored 33 goals for Pittsburgh, signed in July, and Luke Evangelista arrived from Nashville on 1 September, then signed a five-year extension. At the draft the Devils took Swedish centre Alexander Command 12th overall.

Jake Allen, 36, who saved .904 in 37 games last season, is expected to start, with Nico Daws, 25, getting his first chance at a full-time NHL job. David Rittich went on waivers on 27 September, the day the Devils claimed goalie Rémi Poirier from Dallas. Nick Bjugstad is out for about four to six months after surgery on a torn pectoral muscle, and defencemen Johnathan Kovacevic and Seamus Casey are also on the injury list.

Captain Nico Hischier signed a five-year extension on 1 July that begins in 2027-28, and Jesper Bratt joined Jack Hughes as an alternate captain on 16 September. Keefe has three new coaches: assistants Ted Donato and AJ MacLean and goalie coach Dan Stewart. On Bet99’s July board the Devils were +3000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 12th of 32.

Where to watch Devils games in Canada

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 13 on Sportsnet, 11 on Sportsnet+, 4 on Sportsnet One, 2 on TVA Sports and 2 on Prime Video. Regional listings add 2 on Sportsnet Pacific, 2 on TSN4, 2 on TSN5, 2 on RDS, 1 on TSN3 and 1 on Sportsnet East. 47 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.

Of the 47 games without a Canadian network, 44 are the Devils’ US regional broadcasts and three are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Blackouts apply.

New Jersey Devils roster 2026-27

The current Devils roster has 32 players, 13 of them born in Canada. Until opening night this is the club’s training-camp list, so it shrinks as players are sent down before the season starts. The status column shows any player on the injury report.

New Jersey Devils odds and how the market sees them

The Devils markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. On Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 the Devils were +3000 to win the Stanley Cup, joint 12th of the 32 teams on the board, level with Buffalo, Utah and Los Angeles, after a season outside the playoffs. Our Stanley Cup odds page carries the current prices for all 32 teams.

Three things move a Devils price during the season. The starting goalie matters most, and the injury section above tracks him. The schedule is next: the Devils play 13 back-to-backs, and second nights are where tired legs and backup goalies show up in the lines. Then there is form, which our power rankings measure each week, and the race itself in the playoff picture. Picks for the weekend slate are in our Saturday predictions column.

These are the NHL sportsbooks we rate for Canadians, listed by province, with the full comparison on our NHL betting sites page:

New Jersey Devils history

The franchise joined the NHL in 1974-75 as the Kansas City Scouts, alongside the Washington Capitals, and after two seasons moved to Denver as the Colorado Rockies, who made the playoffs once in six years. John McMullen, a Jersey City native, bought the club on 27 May 1982 and moved it to New Jersey, where more than 10,000 fans voted in a contest that named it after the Jersey Devil of Pine Barrens legend. The Devils began play at Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, and in November 1983, after a 13-4 Edmonton win, Wayne Gretzky said they were putting “a Mickey Mouse operation” on the ice. Lou Lamoriello arrived as president in April 1987, and on 3 April 1988 John MacLean’s overtime goal against Chicago sent the Devils to the playoffs for the first time. They reached the conference final before losing to Boston in seven games.

Jacques Lemaire became coach in 1993, and his defence-first team, one of those credited with popularizing the neutral-zone trap, was built around Martin Brodeur, Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer. It swept Detroit for the club’s first Stanley Cup in 1995, with Claude Lemieux as playoff MVP. Larry Robinson replaced Robbie Ftorek late in 1999-2000, and the Devils came back from 3-1 down against Philadelphia in the conference final before Jason Arnott’s double-overtime goal in Game 6 in Dallas won the 2000 Cup. Stevens was playoff MVP. Colorado beat them in seven games in the 2001 Final, and under Pat Burns they won a third Cup in 2003, beating Anaheim 3-0 in Game 7 at home. They lost the 2012 Final to Los Angeles in six games under Peter DeBoer.

Josh Harris and David Blitzer bought the club in 2013, and in the 14 seasons after the 2012 Final the Devils reached the playoffs three times. The 2022-23 team set franchise records with 52 wins and 112 points, and Jack Hughes scored a club-record 99 points, before the Devils beat the Rangers in seven games and lost to Carolina in five. Sheldon Keefe was hired in May 2024 and took them back to the playoffs in 2024-25, when Carolina again won in five, this time in the first round. In 2025-26 they started 9-0-1 at home but faded through the winter. Tom Fitzgerald was fired as general manager on 6 April 2026, the Devils were eliminated a day later and finished 42-37-3 with 87 points, and Sunny Mehta was hired from Florida on 16 April.

Most famous player: Martin Brodeur

New Jersey drafted Brodeur 20th overall in 1990, after trading down from 11th with Calgary, and he won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 1994. He was in goal for all three of the club’s Stanley Cups, in 1995, 2000 and 2003, and won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender four times, in 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. He also won Olympic gold with Canada in 2002 and 2010.

He retired in January 2015 after seven games with St. Louis, and he holds the NHL records for regular-season wins (691), shutouts (125) and games by a goaltender (1,266). He was also credited with three goals, two in the regular season and one in the playoffs. The Devils retired his No. 30 on 9 February 2016, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted him in 2018, his first year of eligibility, and he now works for the club as executive vice-president of hockey operations.

Martin Brodeur’s Devils totals, from the NHL’s official statistics: 1,259 games, 688 wins and 124 shutouts.

Stanley Cups

The Devils have won three Stanley Cups: 1995, 2000, 2003. They have lost the Final two times since 1927, most recently in 2012.
