Edmonton Oilers 2026-27 season outlook
Written 24 September 2026. Edmonton have been the West’s most dependable contender and its most frustrating one. They reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2024 and 2025 and lost both to Florida. Then they went out in the first round last spring, and Kris Knoblauch lost his job.
Mike Babcock, hired in June, is back behind an NHL bench for the first time since 2019, and he inherits the league’s best player. Connor McDavid won the Art Ross with 138 points. Leon Draisaitl added 97 in 65 games, and Evan Bouchard’s 95 points led every defenceman in the league. Zach Hyman scored 31 goals in 58 games.
Scoring was never the problem. The net was: none of the four goalies Edmonton used last season saved better than .899. The roster now lists Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi alongside Tristan Jarry, which is the clearest sign of where the summer went. Darnell Nurse and Stuart Skinner are no longer on it.
Edmonton still finished second in the Pacific on 93 points, which says as much about the division as about the team.
Injuries are light going into opening night, with Mattias Janmark on injured reserve and Alec Regula out, both expected back around the opener. On the July Stanley Cup board the Oilers were the shortest-priced Canadian team by a distance.

Edmonton Oilers history
The Oilers were founded in 1972 as one of the original World Hockey Association clubs, playing their first season as the Alberta Oilers before taking the Edmonton name. They moved into Northlands Coliseum in 1974 and signed a teenage Wayne Gretzky in 1978. When the WHA merged with the NHL in 1979, Edmonton came across as one of four surviving clubs.
What followed was one of the great dynasties in the sport. Built around Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson and goaltender Grant Fuhr, the Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. Gretzky was traded to Los Angeles in August 1988. The team won a fifth Cup without him in 1990, with Messier as captain.
Leaner years followed. The Oilers reached the 2006 Final as an eighth seed and lost Game 7 to Carolina, then missed the playoffs for ten straight seasons, a run that produced four first overall picks, the last of them Connor McDavid in 2015. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, now second and third in franchise points behind Gretzky, carried the club into Rogers Place in 2016 and back to contention, including two straight Finals in 2024 and 2025, both lost to Florida.
Most famous player: Wayne Gretzky
Wayne Gretzky is the most famous player in Edmonton’s history and, by most measures, in the sport’s. The Oilers signed him as a teenager in 1978, and in nine NHL seasons with them he won eight straight Hart Trophies, from 1980 to 1987, and four Stanley Cups.
The single-season records he set in Edmonton still stand: 92 goals in 1981-82, and 163 assists and 215 points in 1985-86. He was traded to Los Angeles in August 1988, and his 99 is retired across the whole league.
