Stanley Cup winners: every champion by year

The Carolina Hurricanes are the most recent name on the trophy. They beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in the 2026 Final, clinching on 14 June with a 3-0 shutout in Las Vegas, twenty years after their first championship. This page lists every Stanley Cup winner by year since the NHL took sole control of the trophy in 1927, with the runner-up and the series score, plus the all-time totals, the franchises still waiting for a first title, every repeat champion, and the number that matters most to Canadians: 1993.

Stanley Cup winners by year: 1927 to 1999

The full NHL-era list of Stanley Cup winners, from the first season the league controlled the trophy outright. Team names are as they were at the time: Chicago were the Black Hawks until 1986, and the 1927 Ottawa Senators are the original franchise, which folded in 1934 and has no connection to the club founded in 1992.

Every franchise with a Stanley Cup

Totals count every championship won by the current franchise, including Montréal’s 1916 and 1924 titles and Toronto’s 1918 and 1922 wins as the Arenas and St. Patricks, which predate the table above. Ottawa appear in the next section rather than this one: the original Senators won 11 Cups before folding in 1934, and the modern club has none. Every current franchise, with its first NHL season and arena, is on our NHL teams page.

Montréal have won more Finals than any franchise has reached: 35 appearances, 24 wins, the last of them in 1993 and the most recent appearance a 4-1 defeat by Tampa Bay in 2021. Detroit have been to 24 Finals, Toronto 21 and Boston 20. At the other end, Colorado have converted all three of their trips into championships.

Teams that have never won the Stanley Cup

Ten of the league’s 32 franchises have never lifted the trophy. Four of them have reached the Final and lost; six have never played in one.

Vancouver have come closest most often, with three Finals and three defeats, two of them in a seventh game. Buffalo lost the 1999 Final on a triple-overtime goal that is still argued about. The two teams with the longest waits, Buffalo and Vancouver, both joined the league in 1970. Utah’s history is short because the Coyotes’ records stayed in Arizona when the franchise moved in 2024, and the Coyotes never reached a Final either.

Back-to-back Stanley Cup winners

Repeat champions were common in the Original Six era and have become rare since. Eighteen times a team has won consecutive Cups, and only three of those runs are from the last 30 years.

Detroit Red Wings1954 to 19552
Toronto Maple Leafs1947 to 19493
Detroit Red Wings1936 to 19372
Montréal Canadiens1930 to 19312

Montréal’s five in a row from 1956 to 1960 is the record, and the same club won four straight from 1976 to 1979. The New York Islanders matched that with four from 1980 to 1983. In the salary-cap era the only repeat champions are Pittsburgh in 2016 and 2017, Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021, and Florida in 2024 and 2025, which is why Carolina’s price to defend the title is longer than their record suggests.

The Canadian drought: 33 years since 1993

Montréal beat Los Angeles in five games in 1993, and no Canadian team has won since. That is the single most searched fact about the Cup in this country, and the gap keeps growing. The last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup did so in a run of six Canadian titles in eight seasons, from Montréal in 1986 through Edmonton, Calgary and Edmonton again to 1993. Since then, eight Canadian trips to the Final have produced eight defeats.

Edmonton have come closest most recently, losing back-to-back Finals to Florida in 2024 and 2025. Connor McDavid took the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2024 despite the defeat, one of only six players to win playoff MVP from the losing side. Toronto has the longest wait of any team in the league at 59 seasons.

This season, as of 23 October 2026. Edmonton Oilers are the best placed of the seven. They sit 2nd in the league on 17 points at +15. Three of the seven are inside the top sixteen. None of that settles anything after 10 games. But the next Canadian name on the list of Stanley Cup winners has to come out of this group.

Montréal’s 24 Stanley Cups

The Canadiens’ total is the record and it is not close. Twenty-two of the 24 came in the NHL era, in 1930, 1931, 1944, 1946, 1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986 and 1993. The other two, in 1916 and 1924, were won before the league had sole control of the trophy. The Montréal Canadiens’ Stanley Cup wins include the two longest dynasties in the sport, five straight from 1956 and four straight from 1976, and 23 of the 24 came before 1980.

Carolina, twice: 2006 and 2026

The Hurricanes are an unusual entry. Carolina won the Stanley Cup in 2006, beating Edmonton in seven games, and again in 2026 behind a 37-year-old captain. Jordan Staal scored in each of the first five games of the Final, the first player to do that in 70 years, and became the oldest Conn Smythe winner in history. The franchise has now won as many championships as Florida and Los Angeles, and one more than the club it began life as, the Hartford Whalers, ever reached a Final.

What the record says about betting the Cup

History is a weak predictor in a sport this random, but two patterns hold up. Repeat champions are rarer than they used to be, with Florida in 2024 and 2025 the only back-to-back winner since Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021. And the team with the best regular-season record almost never wins: the Presidents’ Trophy winner has taken the Cup eight times in 40 seasons and not since 2013. Current prices and the seven Canadian teams’ odds are on our Stanley Cup odds page, and NHL awards odds covers the individual markets. The full record by season is kept at NHL.com.
