Montréal Canadiens 2026-27 season outlook
Written 24 September 2026. Montréal open 2026-27 as last season’s best Canadian team. The Canadiens finished sixth overall with 106 points, won seven-game series against Tampa Bay and Buffalo and reached the Eastern Conference Final, where Carolina, the eventual champions, beat them in five games.
Nick Suzuki had 101 points and won the Selke Trophy. Cole Caufield scored 51 goals, Lane Hutson added 78 points from the blue line and Juraj Slafkovský scored 30. Ivan Demidov had 62 points in his first full season and signed an eight-year extension in July.
The summer changed little. Martin St. Louis signed an extension on 14 September, and Derek Lalonde joined his staff as associate coach. Brendan Gallagher went to Vancouver after 14 seasons, Patrik Laine left as a free agent, and Chris Kreider signed for one year at 35.
Jakub Dobeš won 29 games in goal and signed a three-year extension in July. Jacob Fowler, who saved .908 in 17 games, is the push behind him.
Injuries matter early. Kaiden Guhle is out until late October with a groin injury, and Demidov is day-to-day with a foot problem. On Bet99’s July board the Canadiens were +2250 to win the Stanley Cup, second only to Edmonton among the Canadian teams.

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 32 on TVA Sports, 8 on Sportsnet, 7 on Prime Video, 6 on Sportsnet+ and 1 on Sportsnet One. Regional listings add 13 on Sportsnet East and 1 on Sportsnet West. 44 games do not list a Canadian network yet. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.
Games without a network in the NHL’s listings are regional broadcasts. In the Canadiens’ territory, which includes Quebec and Atlantic Canada, the French ones are on RDS, and every one of them appears in RDS’s own schedule of 45 regular-season games. English coverage goes to TSN, mostly TSN2, which carries 50 Canadiens games this season but has not posted its game-by-game list yet.

Montréal Canadiens history
The Canadiens are older than the NHL. J. Ambrose O’Brien founded the club on 4 December 1909 as a charter member of the National Hockey Association, built to appeal to Montréal’s francophone fans. The first Stanley Cup came in 1916, against the Portland Rosebuds, and the club was a founding member of the NHL a year later. Howie Morenz, one of the league’s first stars, arrived in 1923-24, and three more Cups followed, in 1924, 1930 and 1931.
Maurice Richard, Elmer Lach and Toe Blake formed the Punch Line, and Montréal won the Cup in 1944 and 1946. With Jean Béliveau in the lineup, the Canadiens then won five in a row from 1956 to 1960, a run no team has matched since. Béliveau captained the club from 1961 to 1971 and won 10 Cups as a player. Henri Richard won 11, more than any other player. Scotty Bowman’s teams, built around Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and Larry Robinson, won four straight from 1976 to 1979. Rookie goalie Patrick Roy carried Montréal past Calgary in 1986. In 1993 the Canadiens won a record 10 straight overtime games and beat Los Angeles for their 24th Cup, still the last by a Canadian team.
After losing the 2021 Final to Tampa Bay, Montréal rebuilt under Jeff Gorton, general manager Kent Hughes and coach Martin St. Louis. The Canadiens returned to the playoffs in 2025 and fell to Washington in five games. In 2025-26 they jumped to 106 points, won seven-game series against Tampa Bay and Buffalo, and reached the Eastern Conference Final, where Carolina, the eventual champion, won in five. Nick Suzuki had 101 points, the club’s first 100-point season since 1985-86, and won the Selke Trophy. Cole Caufield scored 51 goals.
Most famous player: Maurice Richard
Maurice Richard joined the Canadiens in 1942 and spent all 18 of his NHL seasons in Montréal. In 1944-45 he became the first player to score 50 goals in a season, doing it in 50 games, and in 1957 he became the first to reach 500. He retired in 1960 with 544 regular-season goals, still the franchise record, and eight Stanley Cups, including five in a row from 1956 to 1960.
His suspension in March 1955 set off the Richard Riot at the Forum on 17 March. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its waiting period to induct him in 1961, the Canadiens donated the Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard Trophy to the NHL in 1999 for the league’s top goal scorer, and in 2025 Quebec named him an official historic figure, only the second athlete so honoured. Guy Lafleur holds the club points record, at 1,246.

Stanley Cups
The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups: 1916, 1924, 1930, 1931, 1944, 1946, 1953, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1986, 1993. They have lost the Final eight times since 1927, most recently in 2021.
