How to bet on the NFL in Canada

Placing an NFL bet in Canada takes about five minutes once you know the one thing that decides everything else: which platform your province allows. Get that answered and the rest is an account form, a deposit and a bet slip. This guide walks through how to bet on NFL games in Canada step by step, from finding your legal option to cashing out, with the odds format explained along the way. And if the game itself is new to you, start with our NFL rules explainer, then come back for the betting half. 19+ (18+ in AB, MB and QC).

Betting on the NFL in seven steps

1. Find your province’s platform

Ontario and Alberta run open markets where dozens of licensed sportsbooks compete for your business. Everywhere else, one lottery-run platform is the legal option: PlayNow in BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Mise-o-jeu+ in Quebec, Proline in Atlantic Canada. Our guide to whether sports betting is legal in Canada breaks down every province, and Albertans can see the new market taking shape in our Alberta betting sites guide.

2. Open and verify your account

Every regulated platform runs identity checks. Expect to supply your name, date of birth, address and usually a photo ID before you can withdraw, and sometimes before you can bet. This is not the platform being difficult; it is a licensing requirement, and it is also the quickest way to tell a regulated book from an offshore one. Offshore sites skip the checks because nobody makes them do any.

One more thing the apps will check: your location. Regulated platforms verify that you are physically inside the province while betting. An Ontario account does not work from a cottage in Gatineau.

3. Fund the account

Interac e-Transfer is the workhorse of Canadian betting deposits: near-universal, fast, and drawn straight from your bank account. Cards and e-wallets fill out the menu on most books. Minimum deposits usually sit between $10 and $20, so starting small is easy. Our payment methods guide compares the options, with a dedicated page on Interac betting.

4. Learn to read the odds

Private sportsbooks show American odds by default. Two rules cover ninety percent of it. A negative number is the favourite, and shows what you risk to win $100: at -110, you stake $110 to win $100. A positive number is the underdog, and shows what $100 wins: at +150, a $100 stake returns $150 in profit.

Here is what a typical Sunday line looks like, read aloud. Bills -3.5 (-110), Jets +3.5 (-110), total 44.5: the Bills are favoured by three and a half points, either side of that spread costs $110 to win $100, and the combined score is priced around 44 or 45 points. The moneyline on the same game might read Bills -180, Jets +155. No points involved there, just the winner, with the price carrying the mismatch.

The lottery platforms complicate this slightly by defaulting to decimal odds, where 1.91 means your total return is $1.91 per dollar staked. Same prices, different notation. Our betting odds explained guide has the conversions if you move between formats.

5. Pick your first market

Start with the moneyline: pick the winner, nothing else to think about. It is the simplest bet in football and the right training ground. From there, the point spread is the NFL’s signature market, and totals let you bet the shape of a game rather than the winner. Full mechanics for each live in our moneyline guide and the pages linked from it.

What not to start with: parlays. Every platform pushes them because the margins are the widest in the building. Learn single bets first.

6. Build the bet slip and place it

Tap the odds you want and the selection lands on your bet slip. Enter a stake, check the potential return the slip calculates for you, and confirm. Two habits worth forming from bet one: read the slip back before confirming, because a mistap on the wrong side is a real and unrefundable thing, and note that odds can move between adding a selection and confirming it. The price on your slip at confirmation is the price you hold.

7. Withdraw your winnings

Withdrawals generally return by the method you deposited with, and the first one usually triggers the full identity check if you have not completed it. Interac withdrawals at the faster books clear in hours; cards can take days. If a platform makes withdrawing feel harder than depositing, that is worth noticing.

Strategy that survives contact with the season

Most beginner advice is padding. Three things actually help.

Bankroll first. Decide what the season’s entertainment budget is before Week 1, divide it into units, and size every bet in units. Our bankroll management guide does the arithmetic.

Shop lines if your province lets you. The same game is priced slightly differently across Ontario and Alberta books, and over a season those slivers compound. One account is a price-taker; three accounts is a market. In a lottery province this option does not exist, which makes bet selection carry the whole load.

Respect the key numbers. NFL margins land on 3 and 7 far more than anywhere else, so a spread moving through those numbers changes real win probability. It is the single most transferable piece of NFL pricing knowledge.

Mistakes new NFL bettors make

Betting every game on the slate because the slate is there. Thirteen Sunday games do not owe you thirteen opinions.

Chasing a bad Sunday with a bigger Monday night stake. The schedule is built to invite this. Decline.

Treating same game parlays as a strategy rather than a lottery ticket. They are priced like entertainment; enjoy them as entertainment or skip them.

Confusing a deep prop menu with an edge. More markets means more prices, and most of them are shaded against casual money.

Riding the popular side because everyone is on it. By the time most of the money sits on one team, the price has usually moved to make that side worse, not better.

How welcome offers actually work here

Outside Ontario and Alberta, books advertise welcome offers to new customers, usually paid out in Bonus Bets rather than withdrawable cash, with wagering requirements attached before anything converts to money you can take out. Read the playthrough terms before you deposit, not after. In Ontario and Alberta, regulators bar operators from advertising offers publicly at all, so you will only see what a book offers once you are signed in. Neither model is a trick; they are just different rules about who is allowed to see the sales pitch.

Bet like it is entertainment, because it is

Set deposit limits inside the app before the season starts. Every regulated Canadian platform has them, under PlaySmart branding in Ontario and GameSense in BC and Atlantic Canada. If it stops being fun: ConnexOntario 1-866-531-2600 in Ontario, AHS 1-866-332-2322 in Alberta, and our gambling awareness page lists every province’s line.

How to bet on the NFL: FAQ

Is it legal to bet on NFL games in Canada?

Yes, in every province, since single-event betting became legal in August 2021. What differs by province is where: private sportsbooks in Ontario and Alberta, the lottery platform everywhere else.

Do I have to be in my province to place a bet?

Yes. Regulated apps verify your physical location at bet time, so you can hold an Ontario account but you cannot use it from Quebec. It reactivates when you are back inside the province.

What is the easiest NFL bet for a beginner?

The moneyline. One decision, one price, and settlement is obvious. Add spreads and totals once reading American odds feels automatic.

How much money do I need to start?

Less than a game ticket. Minimum deposits at most Canadian platforms run $10 to $20, and sensible starter stakes are smaller still.

Can I use offshore betting sites instead?

They exist and they accept Canadians, but they hold no Canadian licence, no provincial consumer protection applies, and if a withdrawal goes wrong there is no regulator to complain to. The regulated route costs nothing extra.

What does +200 mean in NFL odds?

It is an underdog price in American odds: a $100 stake returns $200 in profit if it wins. The plus sign marks the underdog and always shows profit per $100 staked.

Can I bet on NFL games from my phone?

Every regulated platform is mobile-first, and in practice the app is the product. Some, like the Ontario books, also run desktop sites, but you can go a whole season without needing one.
