Dallas Stars 2026-27 season outlook

Written 28 September 2026. The Stars open 2026-27 at home to the St. Louis Blues on Friday 2 October with most of last season’s roster back. General manager Jim Nill chose not to break up a group that reached three straight Western Conference Finals before losing in the first round in April, and the storyline is whether it can reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2020.

Dallas went 50-20-12 for 112 points, second in the Central Division and third in the league. It was a third straight 50-win season, a franchise first. Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston scored 45 goals each, the first teammates to score 40 in the same season since the move to Dallas, and Johnston’s 27 power-play goals led the NHL. The playoff run was short. Minnesota won the first-round series in six games, taking the last three after the Stars led 2-1, while Roope Hintz missed the whole series with a lower-body injury.

Salary-cap limits shaped the summer. Mavrik Bourque, a 20-goal scorer, and defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin were traded to Nashville on 1 July for two draft picks, and defenceman Alexander Petrovic signed with Florida. Joel Kiviranta, a Star from 2019 to 2023, returned from Colorado, captain Jamie Benn came back for an 18th season, and Jason Robertson signed a one-year deal on 21 July and can sign a long-term extension from 1 January 2027. Dallas had traded its first-round pick and took defenceman Jakub Vaněček in the second round, 59th overall.

Jake Oettinger, 35-12-6 in 54 starts last season, was scratched from a preseason start on 23 September with lower-body tightness and was still listed as day-to-day on 27 September. Casey DeSmith, 15-8-6 with a .907 save percentage last season, is the backup in the last year of his contract. Rémi Poirier, who led the AHL with 52 games for Texas, was claimed off waivers by New Jersey on 27 September. Tyler Seguin, who tore his right ACL on 2 December 2025, returned in the preseason finale on 25 September. Coach Glen Gulutzan expects Matt Duchene and Colin Blackwell, who both sat out that game, to be ready for the opener.

Plano voters decide on 3 November whether to approve venue taxes for a proposed new Stars arena at The Shops at Willow Bend, while an August agreement with the Mavericks keeps both teams at American Airlines Center at least through 2030-31. The Stars also host Vegas at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, in the Stadium Series on 20 February 2027. On Bet99’s July board the Stars were +1600 for the Stanley Cup, ninth of 32.

Where to watch Stars games in Canada

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 12 on Sportsnet+, 7 on TVA Sports, 6 on Sportsnet, 5 on Sportsnet One, 2 on Sportsnet 360, 2 on TVA Sports 2, 1 on Prime Video and 1 on RDSI. Regional listings add 6 on Sportsnet West, 3 on TSN3, 3 on RDS, 2 on TSN2, 2 on TSN5 and 2 on Sportsnet Pacific. 45 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.

Of the 45 games without a Canadian network, 42 are the Stars’ US regional broadcasts and three are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Blackouts apply.

Dallas Stars roster 2026-27

The current Stars roster has 28 players, 11 of them born in Canada. Until opening night this is the club’s training-camp list, so it shrinks as players are sent down before the season starts. The status column shows any player on the injury report.

Dallas Stars odds and how the market sees them

The Stars markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Western Conference, the Central Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. On Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 the Stars were +1600 to win the Stanley Cup, ninth of the 32 teams on the board after a 112-point season. Our Stanley Cup odds page carries the current prices for all 32 teams.

Three things move a Stars price during the season. The starting goalie matters most, and the injury section above tracks him. The schedule is next: the Stars play 13 back-to-backs, and second nights are where tired legs and backup goalies show up in the lines. Then there is form, which our power rankings measure each week, and the race itself in the playoff picture. Picks for the weekend slate are in our Saturday predictions column.

These are the NHL sportsbooks we rate for Canadians, listed by province, with the full comparison on our NHL betting sites page:

Dallas Stars history

The franchise began as the Minnesota North Stars, one of six expansion teams that doubled the NHL to 12 clubs for 1967-68, with a name taken from the state motto and a new home at the Metropolitan Sports Center in Bloomington. Bill Masterton scored the first goal in franchise history in a 2-2 tie at St. Louis on 11 October 1967. On 15 January 1968 he died, two days after his head hit the ice in a game against the Oakland Seals, and he remains the only NHL player to die from an injury suffered in a game. After years of losing and falling crowds, the North Stars merged with the Cleveland Barons in 1978, and in 1981 they reached their first Stanley Cup Final, losing to the New York Islanders in five games.

Minnesota reached the Final again in 1991 from a losing regular season, beating Chicago, St. Louis and defending champion Edmonton before Pittsburgh won in six games. Owner Norman Green moved the club to Dallas for 1993-94, and on 5 October 1993 Neal Broten scored the first Dallas goal in a 6-4 win over Detroit. Under general manager Bob Gainey and coach Ken Hitchcock, a team built around Mike Modano, Sergei Zubov, Jere Lehtinen, Joe Nieuwendyk and goalie Ed Belfour won the Presidents’ Trophy in 1998 and 1999. Brett Hull, signed in 1998, ended the 1999 Final in Buffalo with the winner at 14:51 of the third overtime of Game 6, a goal that stood although his skate was in the crease, and Nieuwendyk was playoff MVP. The Stars were the first team based in the southern United States to win the Cup, and they reached the Final again in 2000, losing to New Jersey in six games.

Jim Nill became general manager in April 2013 and traded for Tyler Seguin that July. Jamie Benn, captain since September 2013, won the Art Ross Trophy in 2015. The Stars lost the 2020 Final to Tampa Bay in six games, played behind closed doors in Edmonton, and then lost three straight Western Conference Finals, to Vegas in 2023 and to Edmonton in 2024 and 2025. Nill traded for Mikko Rantanen in March 2025, fired coach Pete DeBoer that June and brought back Glen Gulutzan on 1 July. In 2025-26 Dallas had the league’s third-best record, but Minnesota beat the Stars in six games in the first round.

Most famous player: Mike Modano

The North Stars drafted Modano first overall in 1988. He was a Calder Trophy finalist in 1989-90, his first full season, played in the 1991 Final and scored 50 goals in 1993-94, the club’s first season in Dallas. In the 1999 Final he played through a broken wrist, set up Brett Hull’s Cup-winning goal and finished as the team’s top playoff scorer with 23 points.

He played 20 seasons for the franchise, four in Minnesota and 16 in Dallas, before a final year in Detroit, and his 1,459 games, 557 goals, 802 assists and 1,359 points are all club records. No player born in the United States has scored more NHL goals.
