New York Rangers 2026-27 season outlook

Written 28 September 2026. The Rangers open 2026-27 at Boston on 29 September, in the first full season of the retool that general manager Chris Drury announced in a letter to fans on 16 January. Pavel Dorofeyev, a 37-goal scorer for Vegas last season, is the headline addition, brought in to replace the scoring of Artemi Panarin, traded to Los Angeles in February. They play 10 of their first 17 games at Madison Square Garden, where they won only 14 times last season.

The centennial season went wrong from the start. The Rangers lost their first seven home games (0-6-1), a franchise record, and finished 34-39-9 for 77 points, eighth in the Metropolitan Division, last in the Eastern Conference and 30th in the league, missing the playoffs for a second straight season. Mika Zibanejad led the team with 34 goals and 78 points and set the franchise record for power-play goals, and Alexis Lafrenière scored 24 goals.

Drury sent two 2026 draft picks and a conditional 2028 first-round pick to Vegas for Dorofeyev on 26 June, then signed him to a seven-year contract. July brought more change. Vincent Trocheck went to Utah for defenceman Sean Durzi and prospect Cole Beaudoin, defenceman Marcus Pettersson arrived from Vancouver and Will Borgen was traded to Boston, all on 1 July. Oliver Bjorkstrand, Joe Veleno and Eeli Tolvanen signed one-year deals. Alberts Smits, the 18-year-old defenceman taken fifth overall in June, was reported on 27 September to have made the opening roster.

Igor Shesterkin, 25-19-6 with a .912 save percentage in 51 games last season, is the starter again. Jonathan Quick retired after last season, and Joonas Korpisalo, acquired from Boston on 1 July for forward Kalle Vaisanen and a 2028 fourth-round pick, won the backup job, with Dylan Garand placed on waivers on 27 September. Forward Adam Sykora is out for four to five months with a lower-body injury from a preseason game at New Jersey on 21 September.

Off the ice, Quentin Dolan was named team president and chief operating officer on 3 July, with Drury now reporting to him and MSG Sports executive chairman James L. Dolan stepping back from the club’s day-to-day running. J.T. Miller, named the 29th captain in club history in September 2025, begins his second season with the C. On Bet99’s July board the Rangers were +8000 for the Stanley Cup, 21st of 32.

Where to watch Rangers games in Canada

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 18 on TVA Sports, 11 on Sportsnet, 9 on Sportsnet+, 3 on Sportsnet One, 3 on Sportsnet 360, 2 on Prime Video and 1 on TVA Sports 2. Regional listings add 2 on TSN2, 2 on RDS, 1 on Sportsnet Pacific, 1 on TSN4, 1 on Sportsnet East, 1 on Sportsnet West, 1 on TSN3, 1 on TSN5 and 1 on RDS2. 44 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.

Of the 44 games without a Canadian network, 38 are the Rangers’ US regional broadcasts and six are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Blackouts apply.

New York Rangers roster 2026-27

The current Rangers roster has 26 players, 12 of them born in Canada. Until opening night this is the club’s training-camp list, so it shrinks as players are sent down before the season starts. The status column shows any player on the injury report.

New York Rangers odds and how the market sees them

The Rangers markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. On Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 the Rangers were +8000 to win the Stanley Cup, 21st of the 32 teams on the board after a 77-point season that ranked 30th in the league. Our Stanley Cup odds page carries the current prices for all 32 teams.

Three things move a Rangers price during the season. The starting goalie matters most, and the injury section above tracks him. The schedule is next: the Rangers play 11 back-to-backs, and second nights are where tired legs and backup goalies show up in the lines. Then there is form, which our power rankings measure each week, and the race itself in the playoff picture. Picks for the weekend slate are in our Saturday predictions column.

These are the NHL sportsbooks we rate for Canadians, listed by province, with the full comparison on our NHL betting sites page:

New York Rangers history

Madison Square Garden president Tex Rickard was granted the franchise on 17 April 1926, and a newspaper editor’s nickname for the team, Tex’s Rangers, stuck. Lester Patrick replaced Conn Smythe as manager before the first game, a 1-0 win over the Montreal Maroons at the Garden on 16 November 1926, in which Bill Cook scored the only goal. The Rangers won the Stanley Cup in their second season, 1928, after Patrick, then 44, went in goal during Game 2 of the Final against the Maroons when Lorne Chabot was hurt. Bill Cook’s overtime goal in Game 4 beat Toronto for the 1933 Cup, and Bryan Hextall’s overtime goal in Game 6 at Toronto won the 1940 Cup, the third title and sixth Final of the club’s first 16 seasons.

Then came a 54-year wait. The Rangers lost the 1950 Final to Detroit in overtime of Game 7, the GAG line of Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert and Vic Hadfield led them to the 1972 Final, which Boston won in six games, and Montréal beat them in five in 1979. Mark Messier arrived from Edmonton in October 1991, and in 1994, under coach Mike Keenan, he promised a win before Game 6 of the conference final against New Jersey and scored three third-period goals to deliver it. Stéphane Matteau won Game 7 of that series in double overtime, and on 14 June 1994 the Rangers beat Vancouver 3-2 in Game 7 of the Final at the Garden, with Brian Leetch the first non-Canadian to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. Henrik Lundqvist was in goal for the next contenders: Los Angeles beat the Rangers in five games in the 2014 Final, and they won the Presidents’ Trophy the following season.

Chris Drury became president and general manager on 5 May 2021. The Rangers reached the conference final in 2022, and in 2023-24 they won the Presidents’ Trophy with club records of 55 wins and 114 points before Florida beat them in six games in the conference final. They missed the playoffs in 2024-25, traded captain Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider to Anaheim and replaced Peter Laviolette with Mike Sullivan. J.T. Miller was named the 29th captain in club history before the centennial season, but the Rangers finished last in the Eastern Conference at 34-39-9, traded Artemi Panarin to Los Angeles on 4 February 2026 and missed the 2026 playoffs, a second straight absence.

Most famous player: Mark Messier

Messier came from Edmonton in a trade on 4 October 1991, already a five-time Stanley Cup winner, and was named captain at his first home game. He won the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player that season. With the Rangers down 3-2 to New Jersey in the 1994 conference final, he promised a win in Game 6, then scored three third-period goals in a 4-2 victory. The Rangers went on to beat Vancouver in seven games, Messier was credited with the winning goal in Game 7, and he became the only player to captain two teams to the Stanley Cup.

He played 10 seasons for the Rangers, from 1991 to 1997 and from 2000 to 2004, and wore the C in 697 of his 698 regular-season games, the most games as captain in franchise history.
