Chicago Blackhawks 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. Chicago open 2026-27 at Vegas on 29 September without their new captain. Connor Bedard, the 21-year-old from North Vancouver who was named the club’s 37th captain on 15 September, had surgery on his left shoulder on 8 July and is not expected back until November. Frank Nazar is pencilled in as the top centre, between Roman Kantserov and Patrick Kane, as the Blackhawks chase their first playoff place since 2019-20.
The centennial season ended at 29-39-14 and 72 points, 11 more than in 2024-25 but still eighth in the Central Division and 31st in the league, and the Blackhawks missed the playoffs for a sixth straight year. Their 2.56 goals a game ranked joint 30th. Bedard led the team with career highs of 30 goals and 75 points in 69 games, and Tyler Bertuzzi scored a team-high 32 goals.
General manager Kyle Davidson made the big move on 23 June, sending the No. 4 and No. 45 picks in the 2026 draft and defenceman Louis Crevier to Buffalo for defenceman Bowen Byram, from Cranbrook, B.C., and forward Jordan Greenway, and he signed Byram to a six-year extension on 1 July. Kane, 37, returned on a two-year contract on 23 July after three seasons in Detroit, and defenceman Ian Cole and forward Cole Smith signed as free agents. Kantserov arrives from the KHL after leading it with 36 goals. Ilya Mikheyev left for Tampa Bay as a free agent, and Andre Burakovsky was traded to Ottawa.
Spencer Knight is the starter again after going 19-25-11 with a .902 save percentage and three shutouts in 55 starts, and Arvid Söderblom, who saved .880 in 26 games, is his backup. Drew Commesso, re-signed for two years in July, was loaned to Rockford on 27 September. Bedard is the only Blackhawk on ESPN’s injury list, and the club expects him back in November.
Bedard signed a five-year extension on 18 July, and centre Oliver Moore, 21, signed his own five-year extension on 24 September. The Blackhawks play Ottawa twice at the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany, on 18 and 20 December, in the NHL Global Series. On Bet99’s July board the Blackhawks were +25000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 28th of 32.
Chicago Blackhawks schedule 2026-27

Times are Eastern with Central time alongside, TV is the Canadian broadcaster listed by the NHL, and “2nd night” marks the second game of a back-to-back. The Blackhawks play 12 back-to-backs this season, and January is the busiest stretch with 16 games.
Where to watch Blackhawks games in Canada
Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 16 on Sportsnet, 11 on TVA Sports, 11 on Sportsnet+, 6 on Sportsnet One, 2 on Sportsnet 360 and 1 on TVA Sports 2. Regional listings add 3 on RDS, 2 on TSN3, 2 on TSN4, 2 on Sportsnet Pacific, 2 on TSN5 and 1 on TSN2. 43 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. Of the 43 games without a Canadian network, 38 are the Blackhawks’ US regional broadcasts and five are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Chicago Blackhawks odds and how the market sees them
The Blackhawks markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Western Conference, the Central Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. On Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 the Blackhawks were +25000 to win the Stanley Cup, joint 28th of the 32 teams on the board, level with St. Louis, after a 72-point season. Our Stanley Cup odds page carries the current prices for all 32 teams.
Three things move a Blackhawks price during the season. The starting goalie matters most, and the injury section above tracks him. The schedule is next: the Blackhawks play 12 back-to-backs, and second nights are where tired legs and backup goalies show up in the lines. Then there is form, which our power rankings measure each week, and the race itself in the playoff picture. Picks for the weekend slate are in our Saturday predictions column.

Chicago Blackhawks history
The NHL chose Chicago for a new franchise in May 1926, and coffee magnate Frederic McLaughlin soon took control, stocking the team with players bought from the Western Hockey League’s Portland Rosebuds and naming it after the army division he had served with in the First World War. The Black Hawks won their first game 4-1 against the Toronto St. Patricks at the Chicago Coliseum on 17 November 1926 and moved into the Chicago Stadium in December 1929. They lost their first Final to Montréal in 1931. Goalie and captain Charlie Gardiner then carried them to the 1934 Cup, won when Mush March scored in double overtime for a 1-0 win over Detroit in Game 4, and in 1938 a team that went 14-25-9 in the regular season beat Toronto for a second Cup, still the worst record of any champion. Montréal swept them in the 1944 Final.
A new core arrived in the late 1950s: Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Pierre Pilote and goalie Glenn Hall. In 1961 they beat Montréal in the semi-final and Detroit in six games for Chicago’s third Cup. That group lost the Final to Toronto in 1962 and to Montréal in 1965, and the Black Hawks lost two more Finals to Montréal, in 1971 and 1973, during a run of 28 straight playoff seasons from 1969-70 to 1996-97. In 1992 they reached the Final after a record 11 straight playoff wins, then Pittsburgh swept them. The wait ended with a core built around Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. Kane’s overtime goal in Philadelphia on 9 June 2010 ended a 49-year drought, Bryan Bickell and Dave Bolland scored 17 seconds apart late in Game 6 in Boston to win the 2013 Cup, and on 15 June 2015 the Blackhawks beat Tampa Bay 2-0 at the United Center for their first Cup on home ice since 1938.
Chicago finished first in the Central Division in 2016-17 but were swept by Nashville in the first round, and they have reached the playoffs only once since, in the expanded 2020 format. Kyle Davidson became general manager in 2022 and began a rebuild. Kane was traded to the New York Rangers in February 2023, Toews was not re-signed that summer, and the Blackhawks won the 2023 draft lottery and took Connor Bedard first overall; he won the Calder Trophy in 2024. The centennial season of 2025-26 brought 72 points and a sixth straight year without the playoffs, after captain Nick Foligno was traded to Minnesota in March. Toews, who played his final season for his hometown Winnipeg Jets, retired on 19 June 2026.
Most famous player: Stan Mikita
Mikita was born in Sokolče, in present-day Slovakia, and at eight moved to St. Catharines, Ontario, to live with his aunt and uncle, whose surname he took. He played junior hockey there for the Teepees, a club sponsored by Chicago, and joined the Black Hawks for good in 1959-60. He had 11 points in 12 games in the 1961 playoffs as they won the Cup, then led the NHL in scoring four times in five seasons, from 1963-64 to 1967-68.
In 1966-67 and again in 1967-68 he won the Art Ross, the Hart Trophy as the league’s most valuable player and the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship, and he is still the only player to win all three in one season. He played all 22 of his NHL seasons with Chicago, retiring in 1980, and his 1,396 games, 926 assists and 1,467 points remain club records. His No. 21 was the first number the club retired, on 19 October 1980, the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted him in 1983, and in 2011 the Blackhawks unveiled statues of him and Bobby Hull outside the United Center. Hull holds the club record for goals, with 604.
Stan Mikita’s Blackhawks totals, from the NHL’s official statistics: 1,396 games, 541 goals, 926 assists and 1,467 points.
Stanley Cups
The Blackhawks have won six Stanley Cups: 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013, 2015. They have lost the Final seven times since 1927, most recently in 1992.
