Los Angeles Kings 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. The Kings open 2026-27 in Colorado on 30 September, against the team that knocked them out in April, and without Anže Kopitar for the first time in 20 years. Drew Doughty was named the 15th captain in club history on 16 September. Peter Laviolette, hired in June to fix an offence that ranked 29th in scoring, is reunited with Artemi Panarin, whom he coached with the Rangers.
The Kings went 35-27-20 for 90 points, fourth in the Pacific, and their 20 losses after regulation were an NHL record. Jim Hiller was fired on 1 March, and D.J. Smith went 11-6-6 as interim coach to take the West’s second wild card. Colorado swept them in the first round, their seventh straight series defeat since the 2014 Cup. Adrian Kempe led the team with 36 goals and 73 points.
Kopitar retired as the franchise leader in games, assists and points, and Andrei Kuzmenko signed with Pittsburgh. On 1 July general manager Ken Holland signed Mats Zuccarello and Erik Haula, brought back Corey Perry, traded to Tampa Bay in March, and re-signed deadline pickup Scott Laughton. Brandt Clarke signed a five-year contract, and the Kings drafted Swedish forward Elton Hermansson 19th overall.
Holland calls Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg a 1A and 1B, both in the final year of their contracts. Kuemper, a Vezina Trophy finalist in 2024-25, finished at .891 after a December injury, while Forsberg saved .910 and started every playoff game. Kevin Fiala, who fractured his left leg at the Olympics, had a follow-up procedure this month, and Holland hopes to have him back by 1 November. Corey Perry and Joel Edmundson are day-to-day.
Quinton Byfield, a 24-goal scorer last season, is projected to replace Kopitar as the top-line centre between Panarin and Kempe. The LA Kings’ 60th anniversary celebrations start at the 6 October home opener, and Kopitar’s No. 11 goes to the rafters on 24 February 2027, when his statue is unveiled. Doughty, 36, is in the last year of his contract, and Holland wants him to stay beyond this season. On Bet99’s July board the Kings were +3000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 12th of 32.

Of the 43 games without a Canadian network, 38 are the Kings’ US regional broadcasts and five are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Los Angeles Kings odds and how the market sees them
The Kings markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Western Conference, the Pacific Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. Los Angeles Kings history
Jack Kent Cooke, a Canadian who owned the Lakers, was awarded one of the NHL’s six expansion teams on 9 February 1966 and chose the name Kings for its air of royalty. The Kings beat Philadelphia 4-2 in their first game, at the Long Beach Arena on 14 October 1967, and moved into Cooke’s new Forum in Inglewood on 30 December. Goalie Rogie Vachon arrived from Montréal in 1971, and Marcel Dionne signed as a free agent from Detroit in 1975. From 1979 Dionne centred Dave Taylor and Charlie Simmer on the Triple Crown Line, and on 10 April 1982 the Kings came back from 5-0 down to beat Edmonton 6-5 in overtime, the Miracle on Manchester, and knocked the Oilers out.
The Kings traded for Wayne Gretzky on 9 August 1988, and in 1993 he took them to their first Final, which Montréal won in five games after an illegal-stick penalty to Marty McSorley turned Game 2. The Cup came 19 years later. Under Darryl Sutter, hired in December 2011, the Kings became the first eighth seed to win it, going 16-4 in the playoffs and beating New Jersey 6-1 in Game 6 on 11 June 2012, with Jonathan Quick the playoff MVP. In 2014 they came back from 3-0 down against San Jose, won three Game 7s on the road and beat the New York Rangers in five games, the last on Alec Martinez’s double-overtime goal on 13 June 2014.
The Kings have not won a playoff series since. Anže Kopitar succeeded Dustin Brown as captain in 2016, and Edmonton beat them in the first round four years running from 2022 to 2025. Ken Holland replaced Rob Blake as general manager in May 2025, Kopitar said 2025-26 would be his last season, and the Kings traded for Artemi Panarin on 4 February 2026. Jim Hiller was fired on 1 March, Kopitar passed Marcel Dionne as the club’s career points leader on 14 March, and the Kings clinched a fifth straight playoff place on 13 April. Colorado swept them in the first round, and Kopitar played his final game on 26 April.
Most famous player: Wayne Gretzky
Gretzky arrived from Edmonton in a trade on 9 August 1988, and attendance rose sharply in a city not known for hockey. In his first season he won the Hart Trophy, which no other King has won, and led a comeback from 3-1 down to knock the defending champion Oilers out of the playoffs. He added the Art Ross Trophy in 1990, 1991 and 1994. On 15 October 1989, back in Edmonton, he passed Gordie Howe’s career record of 1,850 points, and on 23 March 1994 at the Forum he scored his 802nd goal to pass Howe’s goals record.
In 1993 he scored a hat trick in Game 7 of the conference final against Toronto, the game he considers his greatest, to send the Kings to their first Stanley Cup Final. They traded him to St. Louis on 27 February 1996, and in 1999 the Hockey Hall of Fame waived its waiting period to induct him, the last player to be given that exemption. The club raised his No. 99 and unveiled his statue outside Staples Center on 9 October 2002. Anže Kopitar holds the club’s regular-season records for games, assists and points, but Gretzky’s 94 playoff points are still the franchise record.

The Kings have retired seven numbers, including Wayne Gretzky’s No. 99, which the NHL retired league-wide in 2000 and the club raised in its own ceremony on 9 October 2002. Dustin Brown’s No. 23 went up most recently, on 11 February 2023, and Anže Kopitar’s No. 11 becomes the eighth on 24 February 2027, before the home game against Montréal.
