Detroit Red Wings 2026-27 season outlook
Written 28 September 2026. The Red Wings open 2026-27 at home to the New York Rangers on 2 October without a captain or a permanent general manager. Dylan Larkin, captain since January 2021, requested a trade after last season, and on 11 September the club said it would start the season with the C vacant. Shawn Horcoff was named interim general manager four days later, and owner Chris Ilitch is still searching for a permanent head of hockey operations.
Last season, the franchise’s 100th, the Red Wings went 41-31-10 for 92 points. They were 32-16-5 and level with Carolina for first in the East on 25 January, then went 9-15-5, finished sixth in the Atlantic and missed the playoffs by seven points for a 10th straight season. Alex DeBrincat led the team with 41 goals and 85 points, the first 40-goal season by a Red Wing since Marian Hossa in 2008-09, and Moritz Seider set career highs with 50 assists and 60 points.
Patrick Kane, fifth on the team with 57 points, signed with Chicago, his first NHL club, on 23 July. James van Riemsdyk, Cam Talbot and David Perron were not re-signed. Viktor Arvidsson, who scored 25 goals for Boston last season, signed on 1 July, the day Keegan Kolesar arrived from Vegas for two draft picks and goalie Daniil Tarasov signed after a season in Florida. At the draft, goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa went to Utah for the 23rd pick, which Detroit used on forward J.P. Hurlbert.
John Gibson, who started 57 games last season and saved .901, is the starter. Tarasov is the expected backup, and Trey Augustine has been assigned to Grand Rapids. Larkin missed the start of camp with an upper-body injury from off-ice training and was listed as day-to-day on 27 September, as was defenceman Jacob Bernard-Docker. Simon Edvinsson, a restricted free agent, practised at camp but had not signed by 27 September and played no preseason games. Detroit claimed defenceman Andreas Englund off waivers from Calgary that day.
Ilitch has said the new head of hockey operations will decide the future of the staff, including coach Todd McLellan, and that the hire could come during or after the season. DeBrincat, who grew up in the Detroit area, is in the final year of his contract and has said he wants to stay. On Bet99’s July board the Red Wings were +15000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 24th of 32.

Of the 37 games without a Canadian network, 34 are the Red Wings’ US regional broadcasts and three are US national games. Detroit Red Wings history
The Red Wings began as the Detroit Cougars, an expansion team for 1926-27 that bought the players of the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Cougars. No arena in Detroit was ready, so they played their first season across the river at the Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario, and moved into the Olympia in November 1927. The club became the Falcons in 1930, and in 1932 Chicago grain merchant James E. Norris bought it, renamed it the Red Wings and gave it the Winged Wheel logo, in honour of the Montreal Hockey Club, known as the Winged Wheelers. Under coach and general manager Jack Adams, Detroit lost the 1934 Final to Chicago, then won the Stanley Cup in 1936 and 1937.
The Red Wings swept Boston for a third Cup in 1943, a year after Toronto came back from three games down to beat them in the Final, still the only such comeback in a Final. The Production Line of Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel led the next era, and the Red Wings won the Cup in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955, sweeping both 1952 series with Terry Sawchuk in goal. Five Final defeats followed between 1956 and 1966, and the next title took 42 years. Mike Ilitch bought the club in 1982 and Steve Yzerman was drafted a year later. After Scotty Bowman became coach in 1993, the Red Wings lost the 1995 Final to New Jersey, swept Philadelphia in 1997 and Washington in 1998, and beat Carolina in 2002. They beat Pittsburgh in 2008, when Nicklas Lidström became the first European-born captain to lift the Cup, and lost a seven-game rematch to Pittsburgh in 2009.
The Red Wings made the playoffs in 25 straight seasons from 1990-91 to 2015-16, the third-longest run in NHL history. It ended in 2016-17, their last season at Joe Louis Arena, and they have missed every postseason since. Yzerman returned as general manager on 19 April 2019, and after a 17-49-5 first season his team climbed to 41-31-10 in 2025-26, the franchise’s 100th season, only to fade after sharing first place in the East on 25 January and miss the 2026 playoffs by seven points. On 15 July 2026 the club announced that Yzerman would move to a senior adviser role, and Shawn Horcoff became interim general manager on 15 September.
Most famous player: Gordie Howe
Born in Floral, Saskatchewan, Howe made his Detroit debut on 16 October 1946, aged 18, and played 25 seasons for the club. He played on the Production Line with Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel, and he helped win the Stanley Cup in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955. Known as Mr. Hockey, he won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s top scorer six times and the Hart Trophy as its most valuable player six times, the last of each in 1963.
When he first retired, in 1971, he held the NHL records for goals and points, and they stood until Wayne Gretzky passed them. His 1,687 games, 786 goals and 1,809 points for Detroit are still club records. The Red Wings retired his No. 9 on 12 March 1972, and the Hockey Hall of Fame waived its waiting period to induct him that year. He came back in 1973 to play six WHA seasons, starting in Houston alongside his sons Mark and Marty, and returned to the NHL with Hartford at 51 in 1979-80. The Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor and Detroit opened to traffic on 27 July 2026.
