Pittsburgh Penguins 2026-27 season outlook

Written 28 September 2026. Pittsburgh open 2026-27 at Philadelphia on 30 September, a rematch of the first-round series the Flyers won in April. The veteran core is still the story. Captain Sidney Crosby, 39, from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, is in the last season of his contract and in talks on a new one. Evgeni Malkin, 40, re-signed for one more year, and with Kris Letang they begin a 21st season together, the longest-tenured trio of teammates in North American major professional sports.

Last season beat expectations. The Penguins went 41-25-16 for 98 points, finished second in the Metropolitan Division and made the playoffs for the first time since 2022, then lost to Philadelphia in six games after falling 3-0 behind. Crosby led them with 74 points in 68 games, his 21st straight season averaging at least a point per game, an NHL record, and defenceman Erik Karlsson had 66.

Anthony Mantha, who led the team with 33 goals, signed with New Jersey. Noel Acciari left for Philadelphia, and defenceman Parker Wotherspoon was traded to Vegas for Kaedan Korczak. In came Andrei Kuzmenko on a one-year deal, Nick Robertson from Toronto for a 2028 fourth-round pick and defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk, a free agent from Washington. Ville Koivunen signed for eight years. At the draft the Penguins took Liam Ruck 22nd overall and his twin brother, Markus, 39th.

Arturs Silovs, who took over in goal at 3-0 down against Philadelphia and saved .939 in the series, is projected as the starter, with 22-year-old Sergei Murashov as his partner after a .931 Calder Cup playoff run. Tristan Jarry was traded to Edmonton in December in the deal that brought Stuart Skinner, who signed with Winnipeg in July. Ben Kindel, Blake Lizotte, Justin Brazeau and defenceman Ryan Graves went on injured reserve on 27 September, Bryan Rust is day-to-day after leaving the final preseason game, and Andrei Kuzmenko is on leave after the death of his father.

The club changed hands in June, when the NHL approved the Hoffmann Family of Companies’ purchase of control from Fenway Sports Group, and former captain Ron Francis returned as a special adviser. Marc-André Fleury, Larry Murphy, Jim Rutherford and the late founding president Jack McGregor, the Penguins Hall of Fame’s class of 2026, will be honoured before the home game against Ottawa on 14 November. On Bet99’s July board the Penguins were +10000 for the Stanley Cup, joint 22nd of 32.

Where to watch Penguins games in Canada

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 33 on TVA Sports, 22 on Sportsnet, 10 on Sportsnet+, 4 on Sportsnet One, 3 on Sportsnet 360 and 1 on TVA Sports 2. Regional listings add 4 on Sportsnet East, 3 on Sportsnet West, 2 on TSN5, 2 on RDS2, 2 on Sportsnet Pacific, 1 on TSN3 and 1 on TSN4. 29 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.

Of the 29 games without a Canadian network, 24 are the Penguins’ US regional broadcasts and five are US national games. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so those games stream on Sportsnet+ Premium, which is sold on its own rather than through a TV package, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Blackouts apply.

Pittsburgh Penguins roster 2026-27

The current Penguins roster has 23 players, eight of them born in Canada. Until opening night this is the club’s training-camp list, so it shrinks as players are sent down before the season starts. The status column shows any player on the injury report.

Pittsburgh Penguins odds and how the market sees them

The Penguins markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Eastern Conference, the Metropolitan Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. On Bet99’s board on 30 July 2026 the Penguins were +10000 to win the Stanley Cup, joint 22nd of the 32 teams on the board, level with Boston, despite a second-place finish in the Metropolitan Division. Our Stanley Cup odds page carries the current prices for all 32 teams.

Three things move a Penguins price during the season. The starting goalie matters most, and the injury section above tracks him. The schedule is next: the Penguins play 15 back-to-backs, and second nights are where tired legs and backup goalies show up in the lines. Then there is form, which our power rankings measure each week, and the race itself in the playoff picture. Picks for the weekend slate are in our Saturday predictions column.

Pittsburgh Penguins history

State senator Jack McGregor led the local investors who brought the NHL back to Pittsburgh, and in February 1966 the league awarded the city one of the six teams that doubled it to 12 clubs for 1967-68. A fan contest produced the name Penguins, a nod to the Civic Arena’s nickname, the Igloo. The Penguins lost their first game 2-1 to Montréal there on 11 October 1967, and 10 days later they became the first expansion team to beat an Original Six club, 4-2 against Chicago. Rookie Michel Brière helped them reach the semifinals in 1970, their first playoff season, but he was badly hurt in a car crash that May and died a year later. Creditors forced the club into bankruptcy in 1975, and that spring the New York Islanders came back from 3-0 down to knock the Penguins out of the playoffs.

After finishing with the NHL’s worst record in 1983-84, the Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux first overall, and he scored on his first shift that October. With Jaromír Jágr, the fifth pick in 1990, and coach Bob Johnson, they beat the Minnesota North Stars in six games for their first Stanley Cup in 1991, and after Johnson died of cancer they swept Chicago under Scotty Bowman in 1992. The club went bankrupt again in 1998, and Lemieux, its largest individual creditor, took control in 1999. Sidney Crosby, the first pick in 2005, was named captain on 31 May 2007, at 19 the youngest in NHL history at the time. Detroit won the 2008 Final, but in the 2009 rematch Maxime Talbot scored both goals in a 2-1 win in Game 7 in Detroit. Under Mike Sullivan the Penguins beat San Jose in 2016 and Nashville in 2017, becoming the first team to repeat as champions in the salary cap era, and Crosby was playoff MVP both years.

Pittsburgh made the playoffs in 16 straight seasons through 2022, and Fenway Sports Group took control of the club at the end of 2021. Three straight misses followed. Kyle Dubas took over hockey operations in June 2023, and Sullivan’s 10-season tenure ended in April 2025, with Dan Muse hired that June. Crosby passed Lemieux as the club’s career points leader on 21 December 2025, and the Penguins went 41-25-16 for 98 points to finish second in the Metropolitan Division. Philadelphia won the first three games of their first-round series, Pittsburgh won the next two, and Cam York’s overtime goal gave the Flyers a 1-0 win in Game 6 on 29 April 2026.

Most famous player: Mario Lemieux

Lemieux, from Montréal, went first overall in 1984 and scored with his first NHL shot on his first shift, against Boston on 11 October 1984. He won the Calder Trophy that season, and in 1988-89 he scored 85 goals and 199 points, still the club’s single-season records. On 31 December 1988 he became the only player in NHL history to score in all five possible ways in one game. He won the Art Ross Trophy six times and the Hart Trophy three times, and he captained the Penguins to the Cup in 1991 and 1992, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy both years.

Hodgkin lymphoma interrupted his 1992-93 season, but he returned on the day of his last radiation treatment and still won the scoring title. He retired in 1997. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its waiting period to induct him that year, and when the Penguins went bankrupt in 1998, he turned the salary they owed him into control of the club.
