Tackling is a dying art, right? Wrong.
The Premier League is packed with players who love a challenge, whether they are operating in the centre of the park, battling away in the heart of defence or leading the front line.
Of course, with games in England’s top tier played at high speed, those who do fly into duels must walk a disciplinary tightrope. However, the risk is often worth the reward as players who wear their heart on their sleeve are very much appreciated by the fans.
Last season, it was Luke Ayling who ruled the roost among the tacklers as one of just two players to hit the 100+ mark, making 108 tackles in total across the campaign. The Leeds United man was four ahead of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma, who did play 300 fewer minutes.
There were then two players close to the 100 mark in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (98) and Wilfred Ndidi (96) but, remarkably, the latter recorded his amount of tackles in just 2,179 minutes, averaging 3.97 per 90 minutes. Ndidi was eight ahead of his usual tackling co-king Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who made 88 tackles across the campaign for Manchester United.
In the early stages of the 2021/22 season there is a new name leading the tackle standings with Brentford defender Sergi Canos currently top having made 17 tackles so far, one ahead of Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta before a quartet follow on 14.
