England Women’s Euro 2025 preview

Sarina Wiegman’s team aren’t as invincible as they were three years ago, but they remain one of the favourites. The Lionesses coach had some decisions to make ahead of her final squad announcement, with the fitness of Lauren James a concern.

James missed the end of Chelsea’s Treble-winning season due to injury and was not named in England’s squad for their June Uefa Nations League games. But she has been named in the final squad, with Fran Kirby among those to miss out. There will also be no Millie Bright, with the Chelsea captain removing herself from contention and later undergoing surgery on an injury. Meanwhile, Mary Earps retired from international football just before the squad was announced.

England Women’s Euro 2025 group stage odds and predictions

England finished second in their Euro 2025 qualifying group, and have been handed a tough draw in the final tournament. They face previous winners the Netherlands, France and Wales in the group stage. But England were still 11/8 favourites to win the group, and 1/4 to qualify.

Opta’s pre-tournament predictions gave England a 40% chance of topping Group D, while they were at 33% to finish second.

Those chances took a hit as England lost to France.

Matchday 1: France 2-1 England

  • Date: Saturday 5th July
  • Venue: Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich
  • Kick-off: 8pm (UK time)

This was a rematch of Euro 2025 qualifying, with France finishing ahead of England in their group. These two sides traded 1-2 away wins in qualifying, an it was France who came out victorious here by the same scoreline.

Matchday 2: England vs Netherlands

  • Date: Wednesday 9th July
  • Venue: Stadion Letzigrund, Zurich
  • Kick-off: 5pm (UK time)

This will be the fourth time England have faced the Netherlands since Wiegman switched the Oranje for the Lionesses. England have won two of those games, while losing one. But the Netherlands are an interesting team right now, with a lot of younger stars.

Matchday 3: England vs Wales

  • Date: Sunday 13th July
  • Venue: Arena St Gallen, St Gallen
  • Kick-off: 8pm (UK time)

A local rivalry to finish the group, Wales are at the Women’s European Championship for the first time. These two haven’t faced off since 2019 World Cup qualifying, so it will be a fierce game.

England route to the final

If England win Group D:

  • Quarter-finals: If England win Group D, they’ll face the runners-up of Group C. Opta’s pre-tournament predictions has that as Sweden.
  • Semi-finals: Next up, it will be the Group B winners or Group A runners-up. That will likely be Spain or Iceland.
  • Final: In the final, the likes of Germany or Norway could await. There could also be a rematch against one of their Group D opponents.

If England finish second in Group D:

  • Quarter-finals: If England finish as runners-up in Group D, they’ll face the Group C winners — Germany are the favourites to top that group.
  • Semi-finals: Then it’ll be the Group A winners or Group B runners-up. That will likely be Norway or Italy.
  • Final: In the final, Spain would be the most likely opponents. Unless they’re upset by Group D’s winners.
