Novak Djokovic continued his march to a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title and 11th triumph in Melbourne after beating Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Playing in his first Australian Open quarter-final, Fritz could not sustain a hugely impressive level, and Djokovic broke twice in each of the final two sets to close out the match.

“I suffered a lot in the first couple of sets, due to his high-quality tennis,” the world number one said.

“He was serving well, he was staying close to the line and he was kind of suffocating me from the back of the court. Most of the rallies were on my back foot and it was really difficult to find the right timing.

“It was really hot while the sun was still out there. Physically very draining, emotionally as well.”

Djokovic has won 33 consecutive matches at the Australian Open since his last defeat in 2018.

This will also be his 48th major semi-final, extending a record he took sole ownership of on his way to winning the US Open in September.

Jannik Sinner awaits Djokovic in the last four after he overcame Andrey Rublev 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Despite being troubled by an abdominal muscle, Sinner came through to clinch a straight-set win after being down 5-1 in the second-set tiebreak.

Having ended 2023 on a hot streak and maintaining such levels at this tournament, Sinner reached the semi-finals without dropping a set.

The young Italian has also won two of his last three meetings with Djokovic, defeating him in the round-robin stage at the ATP Tour Finals and the Davis Cup last November. However, the veteran Serb beat him in the final of the former tournament in Turin.

“This is one of the biggest tournaments in the world and I’m happy to play the No 1 in the world,” Sinner told reporters.

“The only thing I can control is that I give my 100 per cent and fight for every ball, then we will see what happens.”
