World Cup 2026 Suspension risks: Every player one yellow card away from a ban in the latter stages

Reaching the knockout stages of a World Cup is an achievement in itself – but for some of the tournament’s most important players, the battle to stay on the pitch is about to become just as important as the battle to win it.

FIFA’s suspension rules at the 2026 World Cup mean that any player who accumulates two yellow cards before the semi-final stage will automatically serve a one-match ban – and with the tournament now entering its most intense and physically demanding phase, the risk of picking up bookings rises sharply.

The good news for players already carrying a yellow card is that all cautions are wiped clean before the semi-finals – meaning nobody enters the final four of the tournament carrying the threat of suspension. The danger window runs specifically across the Round of 32, the Round of 16 and the quarter-finals, where a second booking in any of those three rounds triggers an automatic one-game ban.

For managers, that creates a genuine selection and tactical headache. Do you rein in a key midfielder who plays on the edge? Do you substitute a booked defender before he gives away a second? And which players should you know about heading into the next round of fixtures?

Here is every player currently sitting on a yellow card at the 2026 World Cup.

Suspension risks

Morocco

Morocco will take on France, knowing they have five players who run the risk of missing the semi-final, should they get there. Issa Diop was booked in their Round of 32 match against Netherlands, while Redouane Halhal, Achraf Hakimi, Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El-Khannouss were all cautioned against Canada in the Round of 16.

France

France came through their win over Sweden unscathed, with no players seeing their name taken by the referee. This wasn’t the case in their Round of 16 match against Paraguay, though. It was a tumultuous contest and ended with Bradley Barcola, Manu Kone and Michael Olise all being shown a yellow card.

Norway

Antonio Nusa is the only player within the Norwegian squad that picked up a booking against Senegal. The forward was cautioned for a foul just six minutes after scoring his crucial goal.

England

Only one player was shown a yellow card in England‘s hard-fought victory over DR Congo and it was certainly a key one. Jude Bellingham was booked within the first 20 minutes of the game for a trip. He was joined on the suspension tightrope by Declan Rice, Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly and Jordan Henderson, who were all cautioned in England’s victory over Mexico. Jarrell Quansah was sent off in that game and he will definitely miss the quarter-final against Norway.

Spain

Spain didn’t pick up any booking in their comprehensive win over Austria but Ferran Torres was shown a yellow card deep into stoppage time against Portugal. He’ll miss any semi-final contest if he picks up another booking against Belgium.

Belgium

Brandon Mechele was the only Belgian player to be booked in their comeback victory over Senegal. He isn’t the only member of the Belgian squad to be at risk of suspension, however. Head coach Rudi Garcia was shown a yellow card late on in the game and knows he can’t risk another booking.

Switzerland

Switzerland reached this point by beating Algeria 2-0 and they came through that game without picking up any yellow cards. Three players were shown yellow cards in their penalty victory over Colombia, with Granit Xhaka, Denis Zakaria and Miro Muheim all having their names taken by the referee.

Argentina

Argentina‘s epic Round of 32 encounter against Cape Verde was not for the faint of heart but bookings were at a premium. Gonzalo Montiel was the only Argentinian player to be shown a yellow card, with the defender cautioned deep into extra time. That remains the case after their 3-2 win over Egypt in the Round of 16.
