Having had their Afcon title cruelly stripped away, Senegal have scores to settle as they head to the 2026 World Cup in June.
Pape Thiaw and his side won the Afcon final against hosts Morocco in January, only for the trophy to later by awarded to the Atlas Lions as CAF deemed Senegal to have forfeited the game in controversial circumstances.
What that tournament did show however, is how much quality there is in this Lions of Teranga outfit. Can they now show it on an even bigger stage at this summer’s World Cup?
Senegal route to the World Cup
Senegal have successfully qualified for a third straight edition of the World Cup.
The Lions of Teranga finished top of Group B in CAF qualifying with 24 points, two ahead of DR Congo, while they were also unbeaten in their 10 matches.
Senegal World Cup 2026 fixtures
Just like they did in 2002, Senegal open their World Cup campaign against France at the MetLife Stadium on 16th June. Six days later, they remain in East Rutherford to face Erling Haaland’s Norway.
The Lions of Teranga then conclude their group campaign against Iraq in Toronto on 26th June.

Senegal key players for World Cup 2026
Senegal top World Cup Golden Boot contender: Sadio Mane
- Key stat: Sadio Mane is Senegal’s all-time top goalscorer with 53 goals.
Sadio Mane was Senegal’s top scorer in 2026 World Cup qualifying with five goals. And he’ll be their main route for goals come the summer. The Al-Nassr man will play on the wing but he’s the talisman of this Senegal team. And it will more than likely be his last World Cup, so narrative will play its part too. Mane has seven goals in the Saudi Pro League so far this season in just 18 appearances.
Senegal primary playmaker: Iliman Ndiaye
- Key stat: Iliman Ndiaye has averaged 0.96 chances created per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season.
Iliman Ndiaye is set to start on the opposing wing to Mane, and will be hoping to provide the goals. The Everton man has averaged 0.96 chances created per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, providing three assists. That may not seem like much, but he is keeping up despite not being the main creative threat of the Everton team.
Senegal card magnets & top tacklers: Idrissa Gueye
- Key stat: Idrissa Gueye made 19 tackles in the Africa Cup of Nations, more than any other Senegal player.
Idrissa Gueye remains one of the best tacklers in world football. Even at the age of 36. It was on display at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations as Gueye made 19 tackles, more than any other Senegal player. Only two players across the tournament as a whole made more tackles than Gueye did. Gueye also committed 12 fouls, which was the third-most among Senegal players — though he was just one behind Pape Gueye and Nicolas Jackson.
Senegal rising star: Ibrahim Mbaye
Ibrahim Mbaye has been a fringe player for Paris Saint-Germain this season, but he has still managed three direct goal involvements in 837 minutes. He also found the net at the Africa Cup of Nations, from seven shots and three on target. Mbaye is only 18 and is very much the future of Senegal. He’ll be hoping to make a name for himself at the World Cup.
STAND-OUT STAT: Senegal are the only team to have beaten the reigning champions in their first ever World Cup game. They beat 1998 champions France in the opening match of the 2002 tournament.

Senegal tactical analysis and formation

We could see Senegal lining up in a few ways at the World Cup. They have good flexibility to be able to play either as a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1. Regardless of the formation, Senegal’s starting XI is pretty set. Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye will be the attacking players in support of Nicolas Jackson. Pape Gueye and Idrissa Gueye will be the more defensive midfielders. And that’s the beauty of the setup. Senegal can seamlessly switch between a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, no matter which formation they actually start in.

Senegal manager analysis
As a player, Pape Thiaw was part of the Senegal squad that competed at the 2002 World Cup. That was despite only really being in the team for a couple of years. And he did only play one game at the World Cup, setting up the golden goal winner in the round-of-16 against Sweden. Thiaw had a couple of caretaker spells before becoming permanent boss at the end of 2024. He’s had a very good record too, winning 22 of his 27 games and only losing twice. Those defeats have come against Brazil and Uganda, the latter in the African Nations Championship. Which Senegal went on to win anyway.
| Coach | Team | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | Win % |
