England sealed their best finish at the World Cup since winning the trophy in 1966, thanks to a 6-4 win over France.
Both sides made a handful of changes for the third-place play-off, resting players while giving other fringe stars and opportunity. It brought a game full of chaos, most of which came in England’s favour.
The Three Lions opened the scoring in the third minute, with Declan Rice curling a shot low into the bottom corner from outside the box. Rice was involved in England’s second, sending in a corner for Ezri Konsa to head home. England had also had a goal from Bukayo Saka disallowed for offside just after 10 minutes.
Saka did eventually get his goal in the final 10 minutes of the first half. England capitalised on poor defending, with France committing all outfield players to the opposition half on an attack. The Three Lions countered and, after the opportunity looked to have passed, Saka finally finished with an assist from Marcus Rashford. Saka wasn’t done there, adding a fourth just before half-time with the footballing world in disbelief.
Didier Deschamps reacted by making four changes at half-time, bringing on more of his big guns. It took less than three minutes for France to get on the scoreboard. Kylian Mbappe got them up and running, finishing a nice pass from Michael Olise. The goal moved Mbappe one clear at the top of the Golden Boot charts, and level with Lionel Messi as the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.
France were back within two goals inside 10 minutes of the second half, as Bradley Barcola broke through England’s line to calmly finish. The next goal was even more significant. Mbappe scored his second of the game, making him the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history.
Les Bleus had a host of chances of draw level, but they could not take them. Saka completed his hat-trick — and the win — in the final five minutes from the penalty spot. There was still time, however, for both Ousmane Dembele and Jude Bellingham to get on the scoresheet.
