Newcastle United and Manchester United face off in the Premier League on Wednesday at 8:15pm, with Peter Bankes set to referee.
Bankes is one of the most-used referees in the Premier League this season, with this set to be his 21st game of the campaign. Four of those games have involved Newcastle — with Bankes refereeing no team more than the Magpies.
By contrast, this will be just Bankes’ second Man Utd game of the season.
The Red Devils are looking for a third consecutive league win as they hope to tighten their grip on a spot in the top four. Newcastle, meanwhile, will be hoping to jump into the top half of the table.

Peter Bankes’ Newcastle record
This will be Bankes’ 21st Newcastle game, and the Magpies have a pretty even record with him in the middle. They’ve won seven and lost seven with six draws to date. Bankes’ dealing in Newcastle matches his fair too, with 42 yellow cards against them and 40 shown to their opponents. He has only sent off one Newcastle player, and that was back in 2020. Bankes has awarded Newcastle three penalties, while also giving three against them.

What happened when Peter Bankes last refereed Newcastle?
Bankes was the man in the middle for the Tyne-Weir derby in December. Newcastle were the losing side in that match, falling 1-0 to bitter rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Bankes showed nine cards in the game, with four for Newcastle and five for Sunderland. Only three of those cards were shown for fouls, though. Two Newcastle players were booked for arguing, with another for dissent. Sunderland had one card for dissent, another for arguing and a third for time wasting.

Peter Bankes’ Man Utd record
Bankes hasn’t been utilised in many Man Utd games compared to other clubs, with this set to be his 11th match in the middle. Man Utd have won four of the 10 games he has refereed so far, and fans might be happy to see him. Bankes has sent off one Man Utd player, but also dismissed three of their opponents. He has also awarded Man Utd one penalty, with none against them.

What happened when Peter Bankes last refereed Man Utd?
Bankes was the referee for Man Utd’s fiery clash with Chelsea earlier this season. He started with an early red card to Robert Sanchez for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, but later sent Casemiro off for two yellow cards. Casemiro’s two yellows were the only cards Man Utd received in that game, compared to Chelsea’s six. Even Enzo Maresca was booked.
What should we expect from Peter Bankes?
Bankes is one of the tougher referees in the Premier League this season without being overly harsh. He averages 4.1 cards per game and 5.4 fouls per card. But Bankes is one of four referees to send off three players in the Premier League this season. He’s also one of a group to have awarded at least five penalties.
