Burnley and Chelsea face off in the Premier League on Saturday at 12:30pm, with Peter Bankes set to referee.
This will be Bankes’ ninth Premier League game this season, and he is one of the most-used referees in the top-flight. He’s also pretty strict. Bankes is one of just four referees to award three penalties in the Premier League this season, and one of two to show two red cards.
Bankes has already refereed Chelsea this season, overseeing their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The Blues will be hoping for better this time around as they look to tighten their grip on a spot in the top four. Burnley, meanwhile, are looking to climb the table.

Peter Bankes’ Burnley record
This will be Bankes’ 10th Burnley game as a referee. His first came way back in the Championship in 2015, a 2-1 win over Rotherham United with very little incident. Bankes has refereed Burnley four times in the Premier League, and the Clarets have had a mixed bag in terms of results. They’ve lost two, drawn one and won one — both defeats, concidentally, came against Crystal Palace at Turf Moor by a score of 2-0.

What happened when Peter Bankes last refereed Burnley?
You have to go back to November 2023 to find the last Burnley game that Bankes officiated. It was a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Turf Moor in the Premier League. And it wasn’t very eventful — for Burnley, at least. The Clarets escaped with no cautions compared to Palace’s five, with three of those coming for dissent.

Peter Bankes’ Chelsea record
Bankes has overseen 12 Chelsea games so far, with the Blues winning seven of those. But two of those wins have come against lower-league opposition in the FA Cup. In terms of league results, Chelsea have drawn three and lost two of the 10 games, while winning five. Bankes hasn’t been shy to book Chelsea players, with 24 yellow cards in total, showing then at least three in four separate matches.

What happened when Peter Bankes last refereed Chelsea?
As mentioned, Bankes was the man in the middle for Chelsea’s defeat to Man Utd earlier this season. And boy was he busy. Bankes showed five yellow cards to Chelsea players, and one to Enzo Maresca. He also sent off Robert Sanchez after just five minutes for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity. Bankes only showed two yellow cards to Man Utd, both for Casemiro who was given his marching orders on the stroke of half-time.
What should we expect from Peter Bankes?
Bankes is one of the harsher referees in the Premier League right now. He averages 4.3 cards per game, with only three showing more. As mentioned, he is one of two referees to show two red cards in the league this season. And they both came in his only Chelsea game so far.
