Arsenal vs Wolves referee: Robert Jones’ history with both clubs

Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers face off in the Premier League on Saturday at 8pm, with Robert Jones the appointed referee.

Jones has refereed nine Premier League games so far this season, and he has already refereed a Wolves game. Jones hasn’t been without controvery either. He overturned Josh King’s goal for Fulham against Chelsea for a light foul in midfield, persuaded by VAR — voted an error by our followers on X.

Arsenal remain top of the table but their lead has been cut to just two points after defeat last weekend. Wolves are bottom of the league, still awaiting their first win of the season.

Robert Jones’ Arsenal record

This will be Jones’ eighth Arsenal game as a referee, with six of the previous seven coming in the Premier League. But the first was a Carabao Cup quarter-final win in 2021. Arsenal were unbeaten in their first six games with Jones in the middle, before suffering defeat last time out. Five of the seven games so far have also been at the Emirates, with this being number six.

What happened when Robert Jones last refereed Arsenal?

Arsenal fans won’t be happy to see Jones at the Emirates. He was the man in the middle for their 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last season. And there was a lot for him to do. William Saliba was sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, bringing down Evanilson just inside the Arsenal half. Jones had only booked Saliba, with an overturn recommended by VAR. Arsenal also conceded a penalty late on.

Robert Jones’ Wolves record

Wolves are one of Jones’ more-officiated teams, with this set to be his 16th game. Jones first started refereeing Wolves in the Championship, but the large majority of his matches have been in the Premier League. Wolves were on a good run with Jones in the middle, winning four matches in a row. But that did come to an end last time out — not that it was Jones’ fault. Interestingly, Jones has only shown Wolves three cards in his past five of their games as referee, with all coming in the same match.

What happened when Robert Jones last refereed Wolves?

What should we expect from Robert Jones?

Robert Jones is one of the more lenient referees in the Premier League, averaging 3.6 cards per game. And he averages 5.6 fouls per card. But he has been card-heavy recently. Jones has shown at least five cards in each of his past three Premier League matches, including seven in his last game.
