Goal Types
Headed Goals
An Opta-defined headed goal is a goal scored by a player via contact with their head, as determined by Opta’s adjudication. It counts as a shot on target and is one of the body parts considered when calculating Expected Goals (xG). For settlement purposes in betting, it requires a direct contact from the head.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the height advantage he enjoyed, Peter Crouch is the Premier League’s most prolific goalscorer with the head, scoring 54 headed goals during his time with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and several others. Following Crouch are Alan Shearer, Dion Dublin and Les Ferdinand as the only other three players to manage 40 or more headed goals.
Goals from Inside the Box
An Opta goal from inside the box is a goal where the shot’s origin was within or on the lines of the 18-yard penalty area, with any shot taken from the boundary line counting as being inside the box.
Alan Shearer, the top goalscorer in Premier League history, scoring 227 of his 260 Premier League goals from inside the box, making him the leader for this stat in the history of the competition.
Goals from Outside the Box
Opta defines a goal from outside the box as a goal scored from a shot originating outside the 18-yard penalty area line, with the line itself considered inside the box. This measurement is determined by the ball’s position at the moment the shot is taken, regardless of any deflections.
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in Premier League history with 41. Long-range shots have become less of a feature of Premier League games in recent years, hence why it’s unsurprising to see Lampard joined by former England teammates David Beckham and Steven Gerrard in the top three.
Right-footed goals
An Opta “right footed goal” is a goal scored by a player using their right foot, as defined by the Stats Perform (formerly Opta) event definitions, which also record goals scored with the left foot, the head, or other body parts like the knee or chest. Again, Alan Shearer leads the way for right-footed goals with 194 of his 260 Premier League goals being scored with his right-foot.
Left-footed goals
Pretty self-explanatory! See above, but swap the right foot for the left foot. Liverpool players tend to dominate in this metric, with Mohamed Salah overtaking Robbie Fowler in 2023 to become the scorer of the most left-footed goals in Premier League history. At the time of writing his total stands at 151.
Set-piece goals
An Opta set piece goal is a goal scored directly from a dead-ball situation, such as a corner, free kick, penalty, or throw-in, before the phase of play has transitioned into open play. Set pieces are pre-planned strategies that occur after a stoppage in play, like a foul or the ball going out of bounds, providing a structured opportunity to score.
Although goals from corners are rare, free-kicks often present the best opportunity to score set-piece goals and David Beckham leads the way with goals from free-kicks with 18 in his career – although West Ham’s James Ward-Prowse is lurking just behind on 17 at the time of writing.
In terms of penalties, it’s that man Alan Shearer at the top of the pile once again with 56 – although he has also missed the joint-highest amount of penalties in the league’s history with 11 alongside Wayne Rooney.
