A terrific Kylian Mbappe brace secured three points for France against Senegal and confirmed the Real Madrid man as his country’s greatest ever goalscorer.
After a dour first-half, Mbappe exploded into life in the second half, putting his team in the lead before Bradley Barcola made it two with a deft finish.
Ibrahim Mbaye briefly restored hope for the Lions of Teranga before a long-range thunderbolt from Mbappe wrapped up the game.
In a tense first period, the two sides seemed well-matched, with Senegal seemingly having more control but France’s individual quality always carrying a threat.
Indeed, the Lions of Teranga had the first real chance of the game when Nicolas Jackson broke down the left hand side and his near-post effort hit the post, rebounded off Mike Maignan and bounced frustratingly wide.
And the best chance of the half was still to come. In the fifth minute of injury-time Ismaila Sarr ballooned a glaring chance over the bar after fine work down the left from
France started the second half with more intensity after a dreadful first 45 minutes, with Desire Doue firing an effort just wide of Edouard Mendy’s right post in the first few seconds after the break. Michael Olise was the next to come close, but the Senegal keeper was equal to his low left-footed shot.
Kylian Mbappe, who endured a dreadful first-half, finally got his first real chance a few minutes later when he wriggled free of Krepin Diatta but saw his shot strike the outstretched leg of Mendy.
Seconds later and Mbappe was brought down in the box by Sadio Mane for what seemed like a clear penalty, but his protests were waved away by the referee – who stuck to his guns despite checking the replay.
Eventually, the Real Madrid man did open his account for the tournament and give his side the lead. Olise was the provider with a glorious defence-splitting path to find Mbappe – who finished first time on the turn to put les Bleus ahead.
Senegal thought they’d earned a quick-fire equaliser when Nicolas Jackson thumped a half-volley past Maignan – but the offside flag was on hand to save France’s blushes.
As the Lions of Teranga stretched themselves looking for an equaliser, more space began to open up for Didier Deschamps’ men. Doue had a low shot pushed away by Maignan, but it was only a matter of time before the second goal came.
Substitute Bradley Barcola was the man to finish off the move, lifting the ball delicately over Mendy after latching onto another excellent through ball, this time from Adrien Rabiot.
Senegal gave themselves some late hope when PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye showed great skill in the box and fired in a shot that proved too powerful for
But that hope was extinguished in spectacular fashion when Mbappe finished the game off once and for all a few seconds later with a phenomenal strike from 35 yards out to make it 3-1.
After a woeful first-half performance, France’s captain was the spark for a phenomenal second half showing and hauled himself clear as his nation’s all-time leading goalscorer in the process.
