Paris Saint-Germain wrapped up the 2021/22 Ligue 1 title with relative ease but there is still quite a bit to be settled on the final day of the season.
There are still three teams fighting to join PSG in the top three, the only spots that will see a French team in the Champions League. But while the rest of Europe’s top five leagues enjoy automatic qualification to the Champions League for all four teams, only the top two go straight in the group stage from Ligue 1. The third-placed team will enter in the third qualifying round.
Monaco and Marseille enter the final weekend in second and third respectively, level on 68 points, with the former having the edge on goal difference. Naturally, they will be fighting for a group stage spot but a draw will be enough to guarantee at least a qualifying round place. However, should either of them lose, they could be caught by fourth-placed Rennes who are three points behind – but have a massive goal difference advantage.
Rennes are also joined by Strasbourg and Nice in the fight for Europa League or Europa Conference League football, while Lens still hold a chance of qualifying for the latter.
Things are just as close at the bottom of the table, albeit in slightly different circumstances. The bottom three are confirmed, with Metz, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux all unable to catch 17th-placed Lorient. But the crucial order is yet to be decided, with only the bottom two going down and the 18th-placed team getting a second chance of safety via the play-offs.
Bordeaux are all-but relegated, needing to win while both Saint-Etienne and Metz lose, with a big swing in goal difference. But for Metz and Saint-Etienne it’s a straight shootout, whoever gets the most points this weekend will get their second chance – and Metz have the upper hand, ahead on goal difference.
