10 players set to be free agents this summer

The 2025-26 season will be here before we know it, but there are several weeks before a ball is kicked in anger, meaning we are in the summer transfer window period.

While we all like the transfers for big fees, there are a host of players who could be on the move for free. As is the case every summer, players’ contracts run out at the end of June. And not everyone has signed a new deal.

Some have already confirmed moves elsewhere, like Jonathan Tah, while the likes of Leroy Sane and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been unveiled with their new teams—as well as other reportedly done deals. But what of those whose futures are still in doubt?

We’ve selected a handful of Premier League stars and beyond who, as things stand, are set to be free agents this summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The biggest name set to be a free agent this summer is Cristiano Ronaldo. Although the 38-year-old likely won’t be a free agent for too long, Ronaldo’s contract with Al Nassr is up this summer. Although FIFA wanted him to participate in the Club World Cup, the Portuguese forward ruled out such a move, having led his country to a second Nations League title. It remains to be seen where the five-time Ballon d’Or winner ends up in the next chapter of his illustrious career.

Neymar

Neymar made the hero’s return to Santos in January, joining his boyhood club on a free transfer from Al-Hilal. The Brazilian only signed a five-month contract to start off with, which obviously runs out this summer. Neymar has revealed that he will make a decision about his future after 12th June. The reason for that date is that Brazil’s Serie A will take a month’s break for the Club World Cup. Santos aren’t involved at the tournament, so it will give Neymar a chance to focus before making a decision.

Jonathan David

Jonathan David played 32 games for Lille as they finished fifth in Ligue 1, but it was an impressive campaign on a personal note as he netted 16 goals, which saw him placed third in the Golden Boot standings. The Canadian’s contract is up this summer, and there is no news of a new deal yet. He has long been associated with a Premier League move—recently linked with Tottenham, West Ham, and Newcastle—while the 25-year-old marksman, who registered seven Champions League goals last term, caught the eye of Serie A trio Juventus, champions Napoli, and Inter Milan, while there is also the Saudi Pro League factor.

Alexandre Lacazette

Another former Premier League player on the move, Alexandre Lacazette is set to leave Lyon for the second time. Lacazette is now 34 and has spent the past three years at Lyon, after a five-year stay at Arsenal. The Frenchman scored 15 goals in 30 league games for Lyon in 2024-25 and may feel he has one last move in him before retiring.

Angel Gomes

Angel Gomes has been at Lille for five years, since moving from Manchester United in 2020. But his time in the French club is up, and a lot of teams are eyeing up a move for the English midfielder. Gomes had enjoyed a good run with Lille, playing his way into the England senior squad. But his playing time was limited in 2024-25 due to injuries and his uncertain contract situation. Gomes has been linked with a return to the Premier League.

Callum Wilson

At the end of Newcastle United‘s final game of the season, Callum Wilson was seen in tears as he waved to the St James’ Park crowd and left the pitch. His departure hasn’t been officially announced, but it’s expected to be the case with his contract up this summer. The Englishman was a reliable striker for Newcastle, especially as a supporting act for Alexander Isak — even if the goals dried up in his final season. He’ll no doubt have a lot of suitors hoping to add some valuable experience.

Nelson Semedo

Nelson Semedo is the Wolverhampton Wanderers captain. But he looks unlikely to be at the club for much longer. The Portuguese full-back sees his contract up this summer, and he is yet to agree a new deal — with Wolves reportedly having made an offer. Semedo has himself admitted he has a big decision to make with his family, so this could still go either way.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton haven’t had much luck with strikers recently. And Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t had much luck with injuries. The pair look set to part ways, with Calvert-Lewin’s contract up this summer. The Englishman hasn’t really done much to persuade Everton to offer a new deal, and this could be a good point for the two to part ways. What comes next for Calvert-Lewin would be interesting.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Southampton were relegated to the Premier League, and are bound to lose a load of players. One of those could be Kyle Walker-Peters, whose contract is up this summer. Walker-Peters played 33 times for Southampton in the Premier League in 2024-25, providing some form of consistency in their underwhelming season which saw three managers take charge. He’s still only 28, so could return to the Premier League.

Tariq Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey hit the ground running at Brighton and Hove Albion after his move from Chelsea. But injuries have hindered him in recent times, and it sees the Ghanaian at the end of his contract. Lamptey’s still only 24 so is yet to hit his peak. But it’s a question of whether Brighton want to keep him with them, or allow him to re-find his fitness and form elsewhere. Lamptey would be a risky pick up, but it could be one worth taking.
