South Korea played out a goalless draw with Uruguay to start their World Cup campaign. There was only one shot on target (by Uruguay), despite the two teams amassing 17 shots between them – since 1966 (when this data is available), only Denmark v Scotland in 1986 has featured more total shots (27) with only one of them being on target.

A remarkable stat considering the 2021/22 Premier League Golden Boot winner Son Heung-min being on the pitch. He is one goal away from becoming his country’s all-time World Cup top scorer with four. That being said, this was Son’s first game back since fracturing his eye socket in a Champions League game against Marseille last month. Head coach Paulo Bento is encouraging patience as South Korea’s talisman gets back up to speed.

“Son is a player who, up until his injury, had continuous rhythm and good performance,” he told reporters.

“He had a serious injury, he was inactive for a considerable time. He only joined the team in the last few days.

“After an injury and being exposed to more aggressive games, it is natural it will take him some step to re-adapt.”

As for Ghana, they suffered a 3-2 loss to Portugal, at one point they were level 1-1. That effort by Andre Ayew came in the second half as the Black Stars became the first team in the tournament to go the entire first half without a touch in the opposition’s box. Ayew’s strike meant the 2010 quarter-finalists became the third African country to score in six successive World Cup matches – after South Africa (six between 1998 and 2010) and Nigeria (eight between 1994 and 1998).
