Mikel Arteta would have been hoping to take some momentum and form into this crunch clash, but the capital club will still be reeling from Everton’s shock 1-0 win over them the weekend before last, as well as the injustice of Brentford’s wrongly-allowed equaliser on Saturday following “human error” by VAR.
The dropped points have allowed City to bridge the gap and build some confidence of their own. Pep Guardiola’s side certainly don’t have an aura of invincibility as previous seasons, showing a soft underbelly at various stages throughout the campaign. But, they remain formidable nonetheless.
Guardiola’s last visit to north London, just over a week ago, brought agony as his side fired a blank in their debilitating defeat to Tottenham. They have since responded emphatically with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa, and will want to follow up against Arsenal. A midweek win will see the two clubs go level on points.

Guardiola will fancy his chances of getting the job done here, if nothing else than because of the day of the week. Indeed, City have won each of the last 22 Premier League games that have fallen on a Wednesday, which, incredibly, is longest winning run on a specific day of the week in the competition’s history.
However, Arsenal will not lie down so easily, as they have already shown this campaign. In Martin Odegaard, they have a potential ‘Player of the Year’ contender and one of the division’s most in-form midfielders. The Norwegian is Arsenal’s top league scorer with eight goals, while he has also provided five assists.
Odegaard’s international team-mate, Erling Haaland, will be champing at the bit to also leave a mark on this showdown.
