Liverpool vs Newcastle prediction, stats, tips and team news | EFL Cup Final

The 2024-25 Carabao Cup Final sees Liverpool take on Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday 16th March at 4:30pm. Liverpool are the defending champions and record winners of the Carabao Cup, winning their 10th trophy last season. Newcastle are two-time beaten finalists. This game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Football and ITV1. Check out our match preview and best bets below.

Mo Salah Anytime Assist (5/2 with Sky Bet)

Mo Salah’s figures this season have been phenomenal. Besides scoring plenty of goals, Salah’s assist numbers have also been mind blowing. In the top-flight he has 17 assists in 29 matches and he has recorded at least one in all of his last six league meetings with the Magpies. At 5/2, this looks a better proposition than backing him to score at around even money.

Under 3.5 Goals & Under 2.5 Cards (7/1 with Paddy Power)

Finals at Wembley can often be a little bit boring and looking back, the last 41 domestic and European matches played have an average of just 1.94 goals. Only 4 of those 41 have seen four or more goals, and with under 3.5 goals priced at 6/10, I’m happy to get involved.

Combined with Under 3.5 Goals is Under 2.5 Cards. Referees are often cagey with their cards in finals, as they look to keep control of the game. There has been a drastic decline in the amount of cards shown in the Premier League over the last few months and combining less than three cards with less than three goals, pays 7/1,

How both teams go into Liverpool vs Newcastle

For the third time in four years, Liverpool are in the Carabao Cup Final, and they’re looking to emulate the teams of 2021-22 and last season by lifting the trophy. The Reds have already seen off four Premier League sides to get this far, beating West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton before coming from 1-0 down to beat Tottenham 4-1 on aggregate in their semi-final.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are still hunting for their first major trophy since 1955. The Magpies beat AFC Wimbledon, Chelsea and Brentford to set up their semi-final clash with Arsenal, which they impressively came through with surprising comfort 4-0 on aggregate. This is Newcastle’s second Carabao Cup final in three years and they’ll be keen to fare better than the 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley in 2023.

Liverpool team news

Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the game after picking up an injury against PSG. Conor Bradley isn’t expected back from injury until after the international break, so will miss this game. Joe Gomez is also out, having undergone surgery on a hamstring injury, and won’t be back until May. Jarell Quansah is expected to slot into defence.

Newcastle team news

The big blow for Newcastle is the three-match ban for Anthony Gordon for his recent red card, which rules him out for the trip to Wembley. Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Lewis Hall are also out, with the latter having been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a foot injury.

Liverpool vs Newcastle head-to-head

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 17 games against Newcastle, including a league win in February. This will be the first non-Premier League meeting between these sides since January 2004 when a Bruno Cheyrou brace either side of a Laurent Robert goal sealed a 2-1 FA Cup win for Liverpool.
