Aston Villa vs Ipswich prediction, stats, tips & team news

Aston Villa host Ipswich Town at Villa Park in a clash that will be important at both ends of the Premier League on Saturday 15th February at 3pm. Aston Villa are looking to cut the gap to the top four, while Ipswich are in the midst of a relegation battle having suffered four consecutive defeats.

Aston Villa to win, both teams to score in 2nd half and Morgan Rogers to be carded (26/1 with Sky Bet)

We’re combining three bets from this game for a tasty 26/1 bet-builder from Sky Bet, including a home win for Aston Villa. Ipswich’s chances of escaping relegation have taken a dent of late with with a home defeat to bottom-placed club Southampton last time out their fourth consecutive league defeat, while Villa are unbeaten in 11 in all competitions at Villa Park, winning seven of those games. The Tractor Boys have at least scored in the second half in three of their last four away games, but they have conceded an average of 1.0 second-half goals across the season so far. Morgan Rogers could be a good bet for a card to add some serious value to this punt – the 22 year old has been carded in each of his last three league games.

Omari Hutchinson 1+ shot on target (10/11 with Sky Bet)

Omari Hutchinson has been one of the main attacking threats for Ipswich Town this season. The England U21 international may generally be seen as more of a creator than a finisher, but he has taken at least one shot on target in each of his last five matches, with one of those resulting in a goal in an impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea. Having been rested for the FA Cup tie with Coventry City last weekend, we’re expecting Hutchinson to be out to prove a point on Saturday afternoon and to test Emi Martinez on at least one occasion here.

How both teams go into Aston Villa vs Ipswich

While they have secured a route through to the Round of 16 in the Champions League, there’s no guarantee of a return to the competition for Aston Villa. And they’ve fallen away slightly in the race for the top four in the Premier League. The Villains are now eighth, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. That gap can be bridged, but there three teams currently in better positions. It’s been a tough time for Villa to go on a winless run, now three without victory in the league. The first two games were draws, but Aston Villa did Ipswich no favours in losing 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out. They have at least returned to form in other competitions since, completing their Champions League league phase slate with a win over Celtic before dumping Tottenham out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win last weekend.

Even if Aston Villa had beat Wolves, Ipswich would still be in the relegation zone. That’s because they missed out a big opportunity to pick up points, losing to the only team below them in the table. Ipswich handed Southampton just their second league win of the season, leaving the Tractor Boys three points from safety. They’re now winless in five games in the Premier League, losing each of their past four. Like Villa, they performed a little better in the FA Cup last weekend, thumping Championship outfit Coventry City 1-4 away from home. They’ll now look to take momentum from that match into their fight for Premier League survival.

Aston Villa team news

Aston Villa will hope to have star striker Ollie Watkins available for this game after he missed last weekend’s win over Tottenham in the FA Cup with a groin complaint. If he does miss out, then Marcus Rashford could be in line for a first Premier League start for the club. Ezri Konsa was withdrawn with an injury problem in the FA Cup clash and could miss out again alongside fellow defenders Tyrone Mings and Pau Torres who could both remain in the treatment room.

Ipswich team news

Sammie Szmodics made his return to the Ipswich team for the FA Cup trip to Coventry last time out, but the 29 year old suffered another setback before the half-time whistle. Long-term problems will keep Wes Burns, Chiedozie Ogbene, Christian Walton and Conor Chaplin out of the squad. One man who could be in line for a rare Premier League start is Jack Clarke, who scored twice in the convincing win over the Sky Blues last weekend.

Aston Villa vs Ipswich head-to-head

Aston Villa are unbeaten in their past five games against Ipswich, winning three with two draws. The previous meeting in the Premier League this season finished 2-2 at Portman Road and that was the first Premier League meeting between the teams in over 22 years.
