The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is almost, finally, upon us in the year of 2024. While the tournament, held in the Ivory Coast, has kept its 2023 name, it was postponed from its originally planned date of the summer due to adverse weather conditions in the host nation.

Held in summer or winter, we’re excited for a month of mouth-watering international action with a wide open field in what should be an excellent tournament.

Senegal are the defending champions having beat Egypt in the final two years ago, securing their first crown. And they are back with a chance to reclaim the title, safely qualifying as Group L winners, their 17th appearance at AFCON.

Seventeen of the 24 qualified teams are making their returns having competed in 2021, including record winners Egypt. After that, there are a few teams who last competed in 2019, but special mention will go to Zambia who are back for the first time since 2015, and Mozambique who have ended an 14-year way for an AFCON appearance.

It feels like there is a fairly open field in Ivory Coast, with several teams considered to be in the running to lift the famous trophy. Senegal are once again the early favourites, as defending champions while also reaching the final in 2019. They’re expected to have the likes of Sadio Mane among their squad, with the Al-Nassr forward hoping to make up for lost time, missing the World Cup last year due to injury.

Algeria are also rated pretty highly as usual, after their 2019 win, beating Senegal in the final. However, their defence came to an end in the worst possible way, exiting the 2021 AFCON at the group stage with just one point from their three games. Riyad Mahrez and co. know they cannot have a repeat of that.

Hosts Ivory Coast can also count themselves among the favourites. Morocco, Cameroon and Egypt are also high up the list alongside Nigeria and Tunisia.

AFCON 2023 Groups

  • Group A: Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau
  • Group B: Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mozambique
  • Group C: Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, Gambia
  • Group D: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Angola
  • Group E: Tunisia, Mali, South Africa, Namibia
  • Group F: Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia, Tanzania

As with all 24-team tournaments, the top two from each of the six groups will advance straight to the round of 16. The final four places will be decided by the best third-placed teams, which often opens up a world of uncertainty for the round of 16 draw.

Today’s AFCON 2023 tips

As with any international tournaments, you have the opportunity to bet on a range of markets and in a manner that’s perhaps slightly different to how you would place your domestic and European football bets. Here’s some of the markets we’ll be utilising during the AFCON 2023.

Both teams to score

Hear us out here. Both teams to score is traditionally not the best bet to place blindly on an Africa Cup of Nations game. Over the years, these tournaments have been low-scoring, particularly in the group stages – but that does mean much higher odds than you’ll find on both teams to score in other competitions..

Over/Under Goals

Don’t believe us and expect the tournament to remain low-scoring? Then the Under bets are for you, where you can place wagers on matches to include under a certain amount of goals. There won’t always be too much value on the tradition Under 2.5 bets, so how about switching it up to Under 1.5 for those particularly tight, defensive fixtures?

Alternatively, if you are backing more goals this time around like ourselves, there will be definitely be some long-odds Overs shots and with games being played every day in the opening weeks of the tournament there is cope for some long-odds accumulators here too.

At the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, 100 goals were scored across 52 matches, for an average of 1.92 per game.

Goalscorers

There will be a host of exciting attackers taking part at AFCON, providing injury doesn’t rob us of the best of the best. Vincent Aboubakar was the top scorer at AFCON two years ago, scoring eight goals for hosts Cameroon en route to a third-placed finish.

In qualifying for this winter’s tournament, Victor Osimhen scored more goals than any other player. The Nigerian was the only player to break double figures, netting 10 goals — five more than any other player. Osimhen has an incredible return for the Super Eagles, scoring 20 goals in 27 caps. And he’ll be hoping to make his mark after sitting out of 2022’s tournament.

To Qualify

As with any tournament, there a few ways to bet on qualifying teams. The first is at the group stage, where you can bet on group winners and just who will reach the last 16. At AFCON, this is a particularly interesting market as four of the six groups will have three teams qualify for the knockout stages.

Then, as the tournament moves into the knockout stages, to qualify bets take a slightly different role. Here, they are particularly useful when you want to back a particular team with an added safety blanket. While a win bet more often than not just covers 90 minutes, to qualify carries over extra-time and penalties. You’re literally backing a team to go through to the next round. Of course, these odds will be slightly lower than the win-draw-win markets, but it has slightly less risk.

To Win

To win the tournament or to win the game, take your pick.  Early favourites to pick up the trophy and win the tournament outright include the likes of reigning champions Senegal, Algeria and hosts Ivory Coast, who are all available at a decent price to lift the trophy this time around.

You can of course also back these and all other teams to win their individual matches and as above with the Under/Over goals bets, you can combine a few different bets on markets like the Win-Draw-Win to create a multiple bet and increase your potential returns.

To Reach the Final

Much like how the ‘To Qualify’ market offers you the opportunity to place a slightly more secure bet than a 90 minute result bet, the ‘reach the final’ market means you can bet on a team to simply get to the final two stage rather than lift the trophy.

This might be particularly handy if you’re backing a team on a certain side of the draw which you may see as favourable, but you don’t expect them to have quite what it takes to go all the way.

AFCON 2023 accumulators

The exciting thing about tournaments such as AFCON is the selection of thrilling, high-quality games that all take place at the same time.

Which means one thing and one thing only: accumulator time.

Indeed, you’ll be able to wager on a host of group games that take place at the same time, applying a myriad of different betting markets on the matches that suit the games, from BTTS to first scorer.

And with our previews on hand to provide the best stats and data on hand, you won’t easily go awry. So, take a stab at the AFCON 2023 accas and watch as the odds turn in your favour.

History of the Africa Cup of Nations

The Africa Cup of Nations has grown from a three-team tournament between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia in 1957, to the 24 team festival of football we will experience in Ivory Coast over January and February.

Now, there is qualifying sections allowing every eligible nation on the continent to compete for the chance to reach the finals, which originally expanded to 16 teams before extending again to 24 back in 2017.

The first ever winners of the tournament were Egypt and they’ve made a tradition of lifting the trophy over the years, winning the competition more than any other team with a total of seven victories.

Since winning three consecutive tournaments between 2006 and 2010, the Pharaohs haven’t been able to add an eighth trophy to the cabinet with Zambia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Algeria and Senegal winning the last five editions.
