Mikel Arteta’s men are level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur after their 4-2 victory over London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday night, revitalising the team following a three-match losing streak. It also moved them three points clear of sixth-placed Man Utd, who have played a game more than their opponents this weekend and must win to keep their already slim hopes alive.

Man Utd fans unhappy with Jesse Lingard after “free hit” comments

Man Utd have started planning for the future, announcing Erik ten Hag as their new manager on Thursday, news that brought positivity to the Red Devils’ fanbase. However, there is still unhappiness in the ranks – and Jesse Lingard has recently been the target of that.

Lingard, who had looked close to leaving Man Utd last summer, has had a bit-part role this season but came on for Paul Pogba in the 10th minute of his side’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday. Expectations were low going into the game, given the gulf in quality between the two sides, and Lingard admitted Man Utd’s game against Arsenal is a similar situation – with the pressure off of the Red Devils.

“We’ve got a big game coming up. We’ve got to regroup fast this week, it’s a big three points on Saturday,” Lingard told MUTV.

“It’s another free hit and we’ll go there with the mindset of winning, staying on the front foot, being intense, doing the basics and having that energy to go and win the game.

“We need to work hard first before you can start playing. Win your individual battles and then you’ll win the game hopefully.

“We’ll work hard throughout this week. However, we train reflects how we play, so we can increase the energy and intensity in training to help that.”

However, those comments did not go down well with the Man Utd faithful, who took Lingard as saying the players would not be taking Arsenal seriously.

“Stop listening to him when he said the game was a “free hit” not necessarily his fault but players like him a part of the problem,” one fan said on Twitter.

“When the only bit of joy is seeing (Hannibal) Mejbri coming on and actually sticking a foot in a running says it all.”

Another said: “To see Lingard come out and call this a free hit again, tells us where the players heads are. Forget top 4, we need a W for Europa, and hes talking about a free hit? There’s a few of them that could do with getting a few free hits on the head to wake up.”
