Bournemouth vs Liverpool referee: Michael Salisbury’s history with both clubs

Bournemouth and Liverpool face off in the Premier League on Saturday at 5:30pm, with Michael Salisbury set to referee.

This will be Salisbury’s ninth Premier League game of the season, as one of the lesser-used officials in the division. But he has already overseen a game for Bournemouth — as well as one in the Carabao Cup. Salisbury has also been VAR for two Liverpool games this season, including their draw with Burnley last weekend.

Bournemouth go in the game 15th, with just one win from their past 13 league games. Liverpool, meanwhile, have drawn their past four in the league.

Michael Salisbury’s Bournemouth record

This will be Salisbury’s 12th game in charge of Bournemouth. He’ll have only refereed one team more. He first oversaw Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup in 2022-23, a penalty shootout win over Norwich City. Salisbury officiated Bournemouth five times in that campaign in total, with the Cherries losing two. Bournemouth have also lost their past three games with Salisbury in the middle. He is yet to award Bournemouth a penalty, but has given three against them.

What happened when Michael Salisbury last refereed Bournemouth?

Salisbury was the man in the middle for Bournemouth’s 1-0 home defeat to Everton at the start of December. It was a busy game for Salisbury, with three yellow cards to each side. Two of those were for dissent late in the game. But there aren’t many controversial decisions to make.

Michael Salisbury’s Liverpool record

Interestingly, this will be just Salisbury’s second Liverpool game as a referee. It came in the Premier League last season, a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town at Anfield.

What happened when Michael Salisbury last refereed Liverpool?

As mentioned, Salisbury was the man in the middle for Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Ipswich last season. It was uneventful for Liverpool, with no cards shown. Salisbury only booked two Ipswich players too.

What should we expect from Michael Salisbury?

Salisbury is one of the harshest referees in the Premier League this season. He has averaged 4.8 cards per game, with only one referee showing more. But he does sit near the bottom of the table for fouls per card, at 5.0. Salisbury averages 24.75 fouls per game, and has awarded seven penalties — more than any other referee.
