What is a hit woodwork?
A hit woodwork is recorded when the ball hits any part of the frame of the goal (post or crossbar), without going in. So a goal that hits the post or bar on its way in will not be counted as a hit woodwork.
If a ball hits the goal frame multiple times from the same shot (bar onto post, or both posts, for example), just one hit woodwork is recorded.
What do hit woodwork numbers tell us about a player?
Hit woodwork stats generally show us how unlucky a player is. Their shots are good but not quite enough to result in a goal. Remember, these numbers don’t include shots that have gone in off the post or bar. But that doesn’t mean the player is bad.
Mo Salah was one of four players to hit the woodwork six times in the Premier League in 2024-25. He was joined on that number by Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Mohammed Kudus. So it’s a mixed bag. Low hit woodwork numbers also doesn’t automatically mean players are shooting accurately. It could also mean they aren’t shooting at all. Or their shots are blocked.
Who have hit woodwork the most in Premier League history?
Historical hit woodwork stats in the Premier League only go back to the start of the 2006-07 season. So you won’t be seeing some of the big names of the 90s on the rankings. Cristiano Ronaldo was one of two players to hit the woodwork seven times in the 2006-07 campaign. But it’s Robin van Persie who leads overall, hitting the woodwork 42 times in his Premier League career.
Van Persie is one of five players to hit the woodwork at least 30 times since records began. And none of them play in the Premier League anymore. Harry Kane sit second on 36, ahead of Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero (both 34). Son Heung-min completes the top five with 31 hit woodworks.
