England Women team news vs Netherlands Women and predicted lineup

England Women face Netherlands Women on Wednesday at 5pm (UK time) knowing their Women’s Euro 2025 future is on the line.

England Women predicted lineup vs Netherlands Women

England Women (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter; Stanway, Walsh; Mead, James, Hemp; Russo.

Sarina Wiegman’s side went into Women’s Euro 2025 as defending champions but got off to a bad start. The Lionesses became the first nation to lose their opening match as defending European champions, beaten 2-1 by France last time out.

It means this game is must-win if England are to stand any chance of making it to the knockout stages.

The match will be broadcast live in the UK on BBC One.

We could see the same starting XI that opened against France with Wiegman not known for making many changes. Lauren James was a surprise starter against France having only recently returned from injury.

But the Chelsea forward impressed and should start again ahead of Ella Toone. The only position really up for debate is at left-back.

Jess Carter struggled against France in England’s opening game, finding it tough to deal with Delphine Cascarino. Niamh Charles came on to replace her around the hour-mark, but France had changed their gameplan to hit England on the counter.

Given Wiegman’s stubbornness, Carter is likely to start again here — especially as no England player really performed in the defeat to France.

Toone was the only England player booked in their opening game against France, so she’ll have to watch her tackles if she comes off the bench. Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp should join James in the attack.

Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway weren’t the best midfield against France, but they’ll start together again here.

The nightmare run England need to end

England’s defeat to France at the weekend continued a poor recent run under Wiegman. The Lionesses are now winless in their past five games played outside of England across all competitions.

The run has seen England lose three games and draw two on the road. It started with a goalless draw against Sweden in qualifying for Women’s Euro 2025. England then drew away to Portugal, before losing on the road against Belgium and Spain in the Uefa Nations League. And, of course, the 2-1 defeat to France last time out. France were also the last team to lose to England outside of the country, falling 1-2 in Saint-Etienne in June 2024.

England haven’t gone six games without victory on the road since 2006-07, when they went eight matches without a win. That run started with a 2007 World Cup qualifying draw away to France and ended with a 6-1 win over Argentina in the 2007 World Cup hosted in China. England drew five of those games and lost three.

The Lionesses also haven’t lost four consecutive matches outside of England since 2003, with a run that stretched to six games. England didn’t score in any of those games, during Hope Powell’s reign.
