The revamped Fifa Club World Cup is almost reaching its climax, with the two finalists confirmed
Thirty-two teams from six confederations descended upon the United States for an overhauled tournament that now features eight groups and four knockout rounds. But now we’re down to the final two.
Chelsea were the first to book their spot in the final by beating Fluminense. And they will face reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea
No one really knew what to expect of Chelsea going into the Club World Cup. They finished fourth in the Premier League but also lifted the Uefa Conference League trophy. The Blues earned their spot at the Club World Cup as 2020-21 Champions League winners. Chelsea were favoured to top their group at least, but they didn’t manage to do that. Enzo Maresca’s side won two of their three group games, beating Los Angeles FC and Esperance Tunis. But the Blues were beaten by Brazilian side Flamengo in their second game, and had to settle for group runners-up.
But that worked in Chelsea’s favour, with results elsewhere making this the “easier” route to the final. The Blues beat Benfica in the last 16, though they needed extra-time in what was a strange game that included a two-hour weather delay. Chelsea then beat Palmeiras in the quarter-finals, a repeat of the 2021 Club World Cup final. Another Brazilian team awaited in the semi-finals, with Chelsea keeping a clean sheet in their victory over Flamengo. The Blues are in the Club World Cup final for the third time in their history, looking for a second win.

PSG
PSG came into the Club World Cup as European champions, finally winning the Uefa Champions League after a long wait. They did it in convincing fashion too, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in a record win. Luis Enrique’s side also won the Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions and Ligue 1. So they travelled to America hoping for a fifth trophy of the season. The French side finished top of their group with two wins from three, losing the other. They beat Atletico Madrid and Seattle Sounders, while losing their second game to Botafogo. But PSG finished top of the group on the three-way head-to-head goal difference.
PSG’s reward was a last-16 tie against Inter Miami, which they won 4-0 — knocking out former player Lionel Messi. It didn’t get any easier, though. Bayern Munich were up next in the quarter-finals, and PSG had to bide their time before securing the 2-0 win with two late counter-attack goals. Real Madrid were put to the sword in the semi-finals, with PSG winning that game 4-0 — their third victory of that scoreline at the tournament. PSG are odds-on favourites to win the trophy on Sunday, and they’ve only conceded one goal in their six games so far.
