League One 26/27 preview
The 2025/26 League One season was dominated by Lincoln City, who finished as champions with more than 100 points. Their defensive solidity and ability to grind out results separated them from the rest. As a result, they secured automatic promotion comfortably ahead of the chasing pack. Cardiff City joined them in the Championship after bouncing back immediately from relegation. One of the league’s strongest attacks kept them in the top two for most of the season. Bolton Wanderers eventually claimed the final promotion place through the play-offs. They edged past strong competition from Stockport County, Bradford City and Stevenage.
Just outside the promotion places, Luton Town and Plymouth Argyle both had frustrating seasons after relegation from the Championship. Each showed flashes of quality but lacked the consistency required to sustain a promotion push. Stockport County once again proved themselves one of the division’s strongest sides. Meanwhile, promoted Bradford City exceeded expectations by mounting a serious play-off challenge almost immediately.
At the bottom, it was a miserable year for Northampton Town, whose long winless stretches left them unable to recover. Rotherham United endured another disappointing campaign and dropped into League Two after a steady decline. Port Vale, meanwhile, struggled badly after promotion and could not cope with the step up in quality. Exeter City completed the relegated quartet after a season spent fighting near the bottom almost throughout.
Looking ahead to 2026/27, the promotion race already appears extremely competitive. Luton Town will likely begin as one of the favourites after underachieving last season. Their squad still contains Championship-level quality. Plymouth Argyle should also expect to challenge strongly if they can tighten up defensively. Similarly, Stockport County look well placed to finally convert steady progress into promotion. Relegated sides Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday could become major contenders too, simply because of their size, budgets and expectations.
The play-off battle could be even more unpredictable. Clubs such as Bradford City and Stevenage have shown they can sustain promotion pushes. However, Huddersfield Town and Reading may feel they underperformed last season and could improve significantly this time around. Newly relegated Oxford United may also become dangerous if they adapt quickly to the division.
At the other end of the table, survival could be especially difficult for the promoted League Two clubs. Bromley, for instance, face a huge challenge despite their impressive rise through the pyramid. MK Dons should have enough resources to compete comfortably, but the step up remains significant. Burton Albion and Wigan Athletic may also head into the season nervously. League One is becoming increasingly unforgiving for clubs that start poorly.
When do you release your League One predictions?
As with our tips from other leagues, we look to release our League One predictions approximately 48 hours before kick-off. Of course, this is subject to change due to fixture congestion. That could be particularly prevalent this season, because clubs must squeeze 46 games into a condensed schedule.
We are packed with EFL expertise at Squawka Bet, so you can trust that our tips have been meticulously researched. In fact, we are not afraid to dive into markets you might not expect from a tipping service. We look to bring a stats-driven slant to our betting content, using the numbers to back up our selections.

The Squawka brand is well-respected among football fans across the world, and with good reason! Our team of writers includes some of the most knowledgeable and passionate EFL experts. Between them, they bring you weekly tips and previews with well-researched and hand-picked stats.
These experts are not only experienced but also have access to some of the best data and stats available. Therefore, they can combine their own knowledge with pure numbers to bring you their best bets on a game-by-game basis.
Are League One tips updated after release?
Yes. Our tips are monitored and updated as kick-off draws closer. We aim to post our League One tips a couple of days before kick-off. That gives punters time to weigh up their options, though timings can shift with fixture congestion.
For particularly eye-catching fixtures, there may be an array of betting guides and pointers around the site. Keep your eyes peeled, then, for a special Squawka slant ahead of the biggest games on the calendar.
What betting markets are popular for League One
Looking for tips on League One action taking place today? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered right here at Squawka Bet. We offer betting tips for every League One fixture, plus specially curated match previews for the biggest games.
Opta data and our own expertise power our League One betting tips. The selections come from a huge variety of markets. These range from straight Win-Draw-Win tips through to more obscure options, including player stats bets when available.
Full time results
The most popular way to bet on a match is to bet on the outcome. This market is often referred to as the full-time result market, although it is also known as Win-Draw-Win among bookmakers. With these bets, it’s worth checking the league table and form. Also check which players are missing for both teams. You can also bet on the result at different points of the game. The Half Time result market is one example.
Both teams to score
After the full-time result market, the next most popular is both teams to score. This is particularly popular within the English lower leagues. A whole host of matches take place at the same time across the Championship, League One and League Two. As a result, there is ample opportunity to fill out your accumulator.
BTTS & Win
Of course, you can even combine your both teams to score bet with a full-time result bet. This market is referred to as BTTS & Win, or Match Result and BTTS with other bookmakers. You may want to look at which high-flying teams concede plenty of goals. Also consider which teams towards the bottom of the table still get on the scoresheet fairly often. Both are good indicators of teams to back on this market.
BTTS in both halves
You can even bet on both teams to find the net in both halves. These bets take the BTTS theme one step further and offer great value. Though perhaps don’t combine them for multiples if you’re hoping for the win! For these bets, make sure both teams possess quality attackers. They need to be liable to conceding goals too.
Over 2.5 goals
Another highly popular betting strategy with lower-league punters is to stick to the Unders and Overs bets. You can change the parameters so that instead of 2.5 you’re backing Over 1.5 or perhaps Under 3.5. The premise is simple, though. If Over or Under 2.5 goals are scored in the match, your bet wins when you’ve backed the right one. This is another market that’s great for long-form accumulators on a Saturday afternoon of EFL fixtures.
Anytime Goalscorer
Got your eye on the top scoring players in League One? Then perhaps an anytime goalscorer bet is the way to go. You can bet on a player to score first, last, or any time within the game. There are tonnes of exciting attacking players in League One to back in the 2026/27 season.
Bookings
With certain bookmakers, you can back players to pick up bookings within the match. Match cards bets are available too. These involve predicting how many cards will be shown in the game, or which team will be shown more.
Corners taken
Corners, much like cards, have become a key component of match bets in recent years. Some bookmakers allow punters to combine bets from these two markets, along with others, for a specially created match multiple. You can bet on how many corners will be taken in the match. Alternatively, back which team will win more corners over the course of 90 minutes.

Three teams are promoted from League One to the Championship each season. The top two teams gain automatic promotion. Meanwhile, the teams finishing third to sixth compete in the play-offs for the final spot.
The Both Teams To Score BTTS market often provides excellent value in League One. The league is known for its open, attacking football and defensive inconsistencies. Therefore, goals tend to flow at both ends.
League One is highly competitive with a smaller gap in financial resources between clubs compared to the Premier League. This parity leads to more unpredictable results, making data driven League One tips essential for finding value.
