Buffalo Sabres 2026-27 season outlook
Written 24 September 2026. Buffalo start 2026-27 with the drought behind them. The Sabres were last in the East on 5 December, changed general managers ten days later and finished on a 39-10-5 run to win the Atlantic Division with 109 points.
They beat Boston in six games for their first series win since 2007, then lost Game 7 of the second round to Montréal in overtime. Tage Thompson scored 40 goals among his 81 points. Captain Rasmus Dahlin had 74.
Jarmo Kekäläinen reshaped the roster in June. Alex Tuch signed an eight-year deal and was traded to Washington, Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway went to Chicago in a deal that brought the fourth pick, which became defenceman Daxon Rudolph, and Olen Zellweger came from Anaheim.
Lindy Ruff, back behind the bench since 2024, signed an extension to 2027-28. In goal, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Alex Lyon split last season almost evenly, and Devon Levi was traded to Edmonton.
Injuries open the season. Jason Zucker is out until mid-October, and Mattias Samuelsson and Zellweger are also out. On Bet99’s July board the Sabres were +3000 for the Stanley Cup, 12th of 32.

Regional listings add 1 on Sportsnet East, 1 on Sportsnet Ontario, 1 on Sportsnet West and 1 on Sportsnet Pacific. 45 games have no Canadian network in the NHL’s listings. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.
Most of the games without a Canadian network are MSG’s Sabres broadcasts against US teams, five are US national games and seven are against Canadian clubs whose regional broadcasters are not listed yet. In Canada, Rogers holds the out-of-market rights, so Sportsnet+ Premium streams them, though Sportsnet+ Standard does not, and NHL Centre Ice through a TV provider is the other route. Blackouts apply. Sportsnet+ treats the Niagara Peninsula as Sabres territory, and there the club points fans to Fubo, which streams MSG’s Sabres broadcasts.

Buffalo Sabres odds and how the market sees them
The Sabres markets with the most depth are the season-long futures: the Stanley Cup, the Eastern Conference, the Atlantic Division, a regular-season points total and a yes-or-no price on making the playoffs. Buffalo Sabres history
The NHL announced on 11 September 1969 that Buffalo and Vancouver would join for 1970-71, with brothers Seymour Knox III and Northrup Knox as Buffalo’s owners. A spin of a wheel decided which new team drafted first. Buffalo won it. The Sabres took Gilbert Perreault, won their first game 2-1 in Pittsburgh on 10 October 1970, and by 1972 had put Perreault, Rick Martin and René Robert together as the French Connection line. In 1975 they reached the Stanley Cup Final and lost to Philadelphia in six games, a series remembered for the Fog Game in Buffalo.
Dominik Hašek arrived from Chicago in a trade in August 1992. He won the Hart Trophy in 1997 and 1998, the only goaltender to win it twice, and in 1999 he carried a seventh-seeded team to the Final against Dallas. Brett Hull ended that series in triple overtime of Game 6 in Buffalo, with a goal Sabres fans call No Goal because his skate was in the crease. The Sabres won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2006-07. Then came the wait. After a first-round loss to Philadelphia in 2011, they missed the playoffs for 14 straight seasons, an NHL record.
The turnaround came in 2025-26. Buffalo was 11-13-4 and last in the Eastern Conference on 5 December 2025, and ten days later owner Terry Pegula replaced general manager Kevyn Adams with Jarmo Kekäläinen. The Sabres finished on a 39-10-5 run, clinched a playoff place on 4 April 2026 and won the Atlantic Division with 109 points. They beat Boston in six games for their first series win since 2007. Montréal ended the run in the second round, when Alex Newhook scored in overtime of Game 7 in Buffalo on 18 May 2026.
Most famous player: Gilbert Perreault
He was Buffalo’s first draft pick. The Sabres took him first overall in 1970, after the wheel spin went their way, and he won the Calder Trophy in 1971 with 38 goals, then an NHL rookie record. He later centred the French Connection line with Rick Martin and René Robert, and that line carried the club to the 1975 Final.
Perreault played all 17 of his NHL seasons in Buffalo, from 1970 to 1987, and his 1,191 games, 512 goals, 814 assists and 1,326 points are all club records. They still stand. His No. 11 was the first number the Sabres retired, on 17 October 1990, and the Hockey Hall of Fame inducted him that year. In 2017 the NHL named him one of its 100 greatest players.

The Sabres have never won the Stanley Cup. They have lost the Final two times since 1927, most recently in 1999.
