Calgary Flames 2026-27 season outlook
Written 24 September 2026. Calgary begin their final season at the Saddledome in the middle of a rebuild. The Flames finished 29th with 77 points, their fourth straight year out of the playoffs, and traded Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri along the way.
The summer added to the young core. Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov arrived from New Jersey in June, and Nemec signed a five-year deal. At the draft Calgary took defenceman Carson Carels sixth overall and centre Jack Hextall 30th, then picked Joe Iginla, son of the club’s all-time leading scorer, in the third round.
Blake Coleman went to Minnesota with Olli Määttä for defenceman Jake Middleton. Ryan Huska stays behind the bench for a fourth season. Mikael Backlund remains captain.
Scoring is the worry. Matt Coronato led the team with 45 points, and no Flame reached 25 goals. In goal, Dustin Wolf started 57 games and saved .899, with Devin Cooley at .909 in 31.
Jonathan Huberdeau starts on injured reserve with a hip problem, expected back in early October. On Bet99’s July board the Flames were +100000 to win the Stanley Cup, level with Vancouver as the longest price in the league.
Calgary Flames schedule 2026-27

Calgary Flames history
The franchise began play as the Atlanta Flames in 1972-73, based at the Omni. Atlanta made the playoffs six times in eight seasons but never won a series. In May 1980 the club was sold, for what was then a record price for an NHL team, and moved to Calgary. The name stayed. The Flames spent three seasons at the Stampede Corral before the Olympic Saddledome opened in October 1983.
Calgary reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1986 and lost to Montréal in five games. The rematch came three years later. The Flames beat the Canadiens in six games in 1989 and clinched the Cup at the Montreal Forum on 25 May, the only visiting team ever to win it there against Montréal. Al MacInnis took the Conn Smythe Trophy. Jarome Iginla became captain in 2003, and that season the sixth-seeded Flames reached the 2004 Final before losing 2-1 to Tampa Bay in Game 7.
Calgary last reached the playoffs in 2021-22, when Edmonton eliminated it in the second round. In 2024-25 the Flames finished level with St. Louis on 96 points and missed out on a tiebreaker. A youth movement followed. During 2025-26 the club traded Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri, then finished 34-39-9 with 77 points, 29th of 32 teams. The 2026-27 season is its last at the Saddledome, with Scotia Place due to open two blocks north for 2027-28.
Most famous player: Jarome Iginla
Jarome Iginla played 1,219 games for Calgary between 1996 and 2013, scoring 525 goals and 1,095 points. All three are franchise records. In 2001-02 he won the Art Ross Trophy and the Rocket Richard Trophy with 52 goals and 96 points, then took a second Richard Trophy in 2003-04 with 41 goals.
He captained the Flames for nine seasons, the longest run in club history, and led them to the 2004 Final. Calgary retired his No. 12 in 2019. A year later he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He now works for the club as special advisor to general manager Craig Conroy.
