Toronto Maple Leafs 2026-27 season outlook
Written 24 September 2026. Toronto open 2026-27 trying to make last season look like an accident. The Leafs finished 28th with 78 points and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Jim Hiller takes over behind the bench, named in June, and he knows the core well from four seasons as an assistant here between 2015 and 2019.
Auston Matthews stays captain after a 53-point season in 60 games, well below his standard. William Nylander led the team with 79 points and John Tavares scored 31 goals. The forward group is still the reason anyone takes this team seriously. Matthew Knies added 66 points.
The biggest change is in goal. Sergei Bobrovsky, a two-time Vezina winner, is now on the roster alongside Anthony Stolarz, after a season in which neither Stolarz nor Joseph Woll saved .900. The draft added Gavin McKenna, taken first overall, who sat second on the July Calder board.
The question for the market is whether better goaltending and a new voice behind the bench can fix a team that finished with a goal difference of minus 46.
Injuries shape the first month. Max Domi is out until November after complications from off-season back surgery, William Villeneuve is a knee case into late October and Nick Paul is day-to-day. For bettors, Toronto are the market’s clearest contradiction: a 28th-place team still priced like a contender.

Counting the NHL’s own listings for the 84 regular-season games, 35 on Sportsnet, 19 on TVA Sports, 13 on Sportsnet+, 6 on Prime Video, 3 on TVA Sports 2 and 1 on Sportsnet 360. Regional listings add 3 on Sportsnet Ontario and 1 on Sportsnet West. 20 games do not list a Canadian network yet. A game can appear on more than one channel, so the counts overlap, and listings change through the season.
Games the NHL lists without a Canadian network are regional broadcasts. In the Leafs’ territory those are split between TSN4 and Sportsnet Ontario, and TSN publishes its own TSN4 list.

Toronto Maple Leafs history
The Maple Leafs are one of the NHL’s founding clubs. The Toronto franchise played the league’s first season in 1917-18, as the team the record books call the Arenas, and won the Stanley Cup that spring. It became the St. Patricks in 1919 and won again in 1922. In 1927 a group led by Conn Smythe bought the club and renamed it the Maple Leafs, and four years later they moved into Maple Leaf Gardens, their home until 1999.
The great eras came in the 1940s and the 1960s. Toronto won five Cups in seven seasons between 1945 and 1951, the last of them on Bill Barilko’s overtime winner, and four more between 1962 and 1967 under Punch Imlach. The 1967 Cup, won against Montréal in the last season of the six-team league, is still their most recent. No active drought in the NHL is longer.
The decades since have produced great players rather than parades. Darryl Sittler, Börje Salming, Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmour, whose teams reached back-to-back conference finals in 1993 and 1994, all have their numbers in the rafters. Mats Sundin remains the franchise’s all-time points leader. Auston Matthews, drafted first overall in 2016, has passed him as the club’s all-time goal scorer and now wears the C.
Most famous player: Dave Keon
Dave Keon was named the greatest Maple Leaf of all time in 2016, when a 31-member committee and about 300,000 fans ranked the club’s top 100 players for its centennial. He arrived in 1960 and won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie the following spring. He was at the centre of all four Cups of the 1960s.
In 1967 he became the only Leaf ever to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. He also won the Lady Byng twice and captained the team from 1969 to 1975, when he left for the WHA. His number 14 was retired in 2016. The rest of the centennial top five were Syl Apps, Ted Kennedy, Darryl Sittler and Mats Sundin.

The Leafs have won 13 Stanley Cups: 1918, 1922, 1932, 1942, 1945, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1967. They have lost the Final eight times since 1927, most recently in 1960.
