Chelsea welcome Real Madrid to Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday at 8pm (UK time).

Thomas Tuchel, who reached the final last season with PSG, masterminded a 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital last week, restricting Los Blancos to a solitary Karim Benzema strike while collecting a precious away goal in the process, laying the foundations for a tantalising showdown in west London later this week.

Scoreline prediction: Chelsea 0-1 Real Madrid

Tuchel was rightly lauded for travelling to Valdebebas and collecting a vital away goal, but given the pattern of play, Chelsea failed to truly capitalise on momentum when they were on top, with Real looking all at sea defensively before Benzema restored parity on the half-hour mark. Given the experience and European know-how of Zinedine Zidane and his side, they are unlikely to make the same mistakes twice, and could produce another Champions League masterclass if Chelsea are not careful.

Chelsea vs Real Madrid build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The Blues have looked formidable since Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard earlier this year, and now look a far more disciplined and organised unit. This has culminated in the club eliminating Man City from the FA Cup to reach the final against Leicester, as well as consolidating their position in the Premier League top four.

For Real, Zidane has kept his side firmly in the title race when at one stage Atletico Madrid were cantering to La Liga supremacy. There will be no domestic cup silverware for the Madrid giants this season, though, with the club exiting both the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana, so a heavy emphasis falls on this showdown at Stamford Bridge.

  • Chelsea (vs Fulham): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Zouma; James, Gilmour, Mount, Ziyech, Chilwell; Havertz, Werner.
  • Real Madrid (vs Osasuna): Courtois; Odriozola, Militao, Varane*, Marcelo; Casemiro, Blanco, Asensio, Hazard, Vinicius Jr; Benzema.

Mateo Kovacic recently suffered a setback in training which will likely see him ruled out to face his former club, but Tuchel could welcome back Antonio Rudiger, who missed the west London derby at the weekend after sustaining a knock in the first leg. Mason Mount came off with back agitation against Fulham, but it is not thought to be a major issue and he should make the squad on Wednesday.

Real meanwhile will be without Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez, but Sergio Ramos could return here, meaning Zidane will likely revert back to a four-man defence, rather than his experimental back-three. Hazard recently returned to action as well, and should face his former club.

In other news Raphael Varane was forced off against Osasuna after feeling discomfort in his right leg and is now a major doubt for Wednesday’s showdown.

Chelsea vs Real Madrid predicted XIs:

Although Tuchel may be tempted to field Kai Hevertz after the German produced a masterclass against Fulham at the weekend, he is likely to stick rather than twist from the first leg, with Christian Pulisic given the nod alongside Timo Werner after the duo worked expertly in tandem to stretch Real’s back-three in the opening stages. Other than that, Chelsea are likely to remain unchanged unless Mount or Rudiger fail late fitness tests.

For Los Blancos, Ramos is expected to return here which will reprise their typical back-four, meaning there is scope for Hazard to retain a starting berth from the weekend, joining Vinicius Junior and Benzema in a more attack-minded system. The midfield triumvirate picks itself, while Alvaro Odriozola is likely to deputise for the injured Carvajal — as he did at the weekend — with Eder Militao partnering Ramos, and Marcelo slotting in on the left.
